Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Tuesday that Iran is prepared to return to the peace agreement with the United States if President Donald Trump honours the commitments made under a memorandum signed in June.
Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Pezeshkian said Iran would respond immediately if Washington returned to its obligations under the agreement.
"Should the US return to its commitments under the memorandum, the Islamic Republic will immediately reciprocate," Pezeshkian said, according to Iran's state-run ISNA news agency.
Pezeshkian blames US for deal's collapse
Pezeshkian accused the United States of undermining the interim agreement shortly after it was signed. He claimed Washington started making additional demands and failed to meet its commitments within two weeks of signing the document.
"Less than two weeks after the signing of the document by the US president, Washington began making excessive demands and violating its commitments, a trend that continues today. Naturally, Iran responded proportionally to these breaches," said Pezeshkian.
The Iranian president's comments came two days after the US and Iran exchanged fire for the first time in a month. The US military said on Sunday that it had struck launchers on Iran's Larak Islands. Washington claimed the launchers were preparing to deploy mines into the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it responded to the US attack by launching missiles at American aircraft based in Jordan.
June agreement was meant to lead to final peace deal
Pezeshkian and Trump signed the Pakistan-brokered Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding on June 17. The agreement was designed as an interim arrangement. It was expected to create a path towards a broader peace agreement between Washington and Tehran.
The deal also aimed to open negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme and eventually bring an end to the conflict. However, the agreement began to fall apart within weeks. Trump later rejected key parts of the arrangement and resumed military action against Iran. Pezeshkian now says Iran remains willing to revive the agreement if the US first honours its commitments.
Pezeshkian rejects coercion in security talks
Pezeshkian also criticised the use of pressure and coercion in negotiations. He argued that lasting security cannot come from unilateral actions. Instead, he said countries must respect each other's sovereignty and maintain mutual respect.
According to the Iranian president, sustainable security requires cooperation and non-interference rather than coercive measures. His comments came amid continuing uncertainty over Washington's approach towards Iran. The US administration has combined military pressure with economic measures while also leaving the possibility of renewed negotiations open.
Iran condemns attacks and thanks SCO members
During his address, Pezeshkian also condemned attacks against Iran. He thanked the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and its member states for their statements condemning US-Israeli attacks against Iran.
His remarks at the SCO summit come as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high. Iran's willingness to return to the June agreement now appears to depend on the US first restoring the commitments made under the memorandum.
