US President Donald Trump has said Washington and Beijing are making good progress as he prepares to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House. Trump said he shares a good relationship with Xi and expects the upcoming talks to produce several agreements between the two countries.

Xi's visit will mark his first trip to the White House in more than a decade. As a result, the meeting has renewed attention on US-China relations, with both sides expected to discuss trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and other key issues.

Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump expressed confidence in his talks with Beijing. He said, "We're doing very well with China. I would say others maybe not so well, but we're doing very well with China. And President Xi and I have a good relationship. We're going to have a lot of different deals."

Trump also stressed the importance of the upcoming discussions. He added, "We intend – we're not just doing it for our health. We're going to have some pretty important meetings."

US-China Trade Talks: Trump Discusses Tariffs on Chinese Goods

Meanwhile, Trump also highlighted the tariff dispute between the United States and China. He recalled that his administration had raised tariffs on Chinese imports to 145 per cent at one point. However, Trump later reduced the tariffs after saying the higher rate had placed heavy pressure on China.

"China is paying us a lot of tariffs. And, you remember, I had it up to 145% at one point, but it was too much. It was really hurting them badly, and I didn't want to do that," Trump said.

The tariff issue remains an important part of the broader US-China economic relationship. Therefore, the upcoming meeting could provide both leaders with an opportunity to discuss trade measures and possible agreements.

Xi Jinping's First White House Visit in More Than a Decade

Chinese President Xi Jinping will travel to Washington this week for his first White House visit in more than a decade. The state visit will bring the leaders of the world's two largest economies together to discuss major issues, including trade, artificial intelligence and Taiwan.

Senior US officials provided details about Xi's visit during a background briefing. The trip follows Trump's visit to Beijing in May, when Xi hosted the US president at the Great Hall of the People.

During that meeting, Trump and Xi agreed to pursue what they described as a “constructive, strategic and stable relationship”. Now, Trump is expected to welcome Xi with full state-visit honours in Washington.

Trump to Welcome Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews

According to the schedule released by US officials, Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, will arrive at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday. Trump will personally welcome the Chinese president and his wife when they arrive.

On Thursday, Trump and Xi will attend a formal arrival ceremony at the White House. The ceremony will include a military review before the two leaders begin their bilateral talks.

At the same time, Melania Trump and Peng Liyuan will attend separate engagements in Washington.

Trump to Host Xi Jinping at White House State Dinner

Later on Thursday, Trump will host a state dinner for the Chinese delegation in the White House East Room. Both Trump and Xi are expected to deliver remarks during the dinner.

Several leading figures from the technology and business sectors will also attend the event. The guest list includes Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Sundar Pichai, Michael Dell, Jensen Huang, Sam Altman, Jane Fraser and Tim Cook.

Their presence underlines the importance of technology, business and trade in the US-China relationship. In particular, artificial intelligence and advanced technology have become increasingly important areas in discussions between the two countries.

Trump and Xi Jinping to Visit National Archives

On Friday, Trump and Xi, along with their wives, will have private tea at the White House. Afterward, they will visit the National Archives to view important documents connected to the founding of the United States.

The visit will coincide with events marking the 250th anniversary of US independence. Following the scheduled engagements, Xi will leave Washington from Joint Base Andrews.

Trump-Xi Meetings Planned at APEC and G20 Summits

The two leaders are also expected to meet twice more later this year. Trump and Xi are scheduled to have additional encounters around the APEC summit in November and the G20 summit in December.

These meetings will give the US and China further opportunities to discuss trade, economic ties and other major areas of bilateral relations.
