External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar delivered a sharp response to a Pakistani reporter who questioned India over alleged support for terrorism in Pakistan during the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session.

The exchange took place in New York on Friday, where Jaishankar is leading the Indian delegation during the High-Level Week of the UNGA.

“When will your government stop sponsoring terrorism in Pakistan?” the Pakistani reporter asked towards the end of the briefing.

Jaishankar responded: “A terrorist country is asking me that question.”

The brief exchange came during a press conference with Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Liberia. The event was organised in connection with the Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers.

Pakistani reporter interrupts briefing

The press event had been announced as a remarks-only briefing. However, towards the end of the session, the Pakistani reporter intervened and raised a question related to terrorism, according to news agency ANI. The question prompted Jaishankar’s direct response before the briefing concluded.

The External Affairs Minister is in New York for the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Week, where he is holding a series of bilateral and plurilateral meetings with foreign leaders and officials.

Jaishankar to address UNGA session

Jaishankar is scheduled to address the High-Level Session of the UN General Assembly on Saturday. During his visit to New York, he has participated in multiple diplomatic engagements involving India’s international partnerships and key global issues.

The UNGA visit also comes amid India’s continued focus on terrorism, security and the need for international action against terrorist networks.

India’s stand on cross-border terrorism

India has consistently called on Pakistan to take "credible action" against cross-border terrorism. New Delhi has maintained that terrorism remains a major security concern and has repeatedly raised the issue at international forums.

India launched Operation Sindoor after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, in which 26 civilians were killed. India described the military action as a response aimed at defending itself against terrorism following the attack.

The Pahalgam attack was condemned at several international forums. The United Nations Security Council also issued a press statement condemning the attack in April 2025.

India highlights concerns over terror financing

India has also continued to raise concerns over terrorist organisations and individuals operating from or finding shelter in Pakistan. Over the years, Indian diplomatic efforts have contributed to the listing of several terrorist entities and individuals at international forums.

New Delhi has further accused Pakistan of failing to adequately prevent financial support reaching terrorist groups. India has repeatedly called for stronger international action against terrorist financing and networks operating from Pakistani territory.
