India Secure Second Straight Asian Games Hockey Gold, Qualify for LA 2028
India defeated Malaysia 5-1 to retain the Asian Games men’s hockey gold, make history with a second consecutive title and secure automatic qualification for the LA 2028 Olympics.
India defeated Malaysia 5-1 in the men’s hockey final at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games to retain the gold medal for a second consecutive edition. The victory created history as India became the first team to successfully defend its Asian Games men’s hockey title. The triumph also secured India an automatic qualification spot for the LA 2028 Olympics.

Harmanpreet Gives India Early Lead

India captain Harmanpreet Singh opened the scoring in the 11th minute. He converted a penalty corner with a powerful drag flick to put India ahead. Malaysia, however, responded quickly and levelled the contest in the 14th minute through Shello Silverius. The opening quarter ended with both teams locked at 1-1.

Jugraj Restores India’s Advantage

India regained control in the second quarter. Jugraj Singh converted a penalty corner in the eighth minute to put India back in front. The defending champions maintained their advantage until half-time and went into the break leading 2-1. Malaysia struggled to cope with India’s attacking pressure as the Indian side continued to dominate possession and territory.

Hardik Singh Extends India’s Lead

India increased its advantage in the third quarter. Hardik Singh converted a penalty stroke in the 12th minute to make it 3-1. The goal gave India greater control as Malaysia struggled to create clear scoring opportunities. India’s defensive organisation also improved compared with its performances in recent months.

Shilanand Lakra Makes It 4-1

India continued to put pressure on Malaysia in the final quarter. With six minutes remaining, Shilanand Lakra added another goal through a far-post deflection. His field goal extended India’s lead to 4-1 and put the defending champions firmly in control. Malaysia pushed more players forward in search of a comeback, but the move created additional space for India.

Harmanpreet Seals Gold With Second Goal

Harmanpreet Singh completed India’s dominant performance with another penalty-corner goal. His second strike of the final made it 5-1 and effectively ended Malaysia’s hopes of a late comeback. The captain finished the tournament as its leading scorer with 12 goals. Harmanpreet also made history by becoming the first Indian captain to win two Asian Games hockey gold medals.

India’s Defence Stands Firm

Malaysia struggled throughout the final to find a way through India’s high press. India consistently forced Malaysia into mistakes and kept the opposition under pressure for long periods. One of the biggest positives for India was its defensive performance. The backline looked more organised and less vulnerable than it had been during the previous few months.

India Creates Double Gold History

India also achieved another milestone at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. For the first time, both the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams won gold medals at the same edition of the Asian Games. The women’s team defeated hosts China 1-0 in the final on Friday to claim the gold medal. The men’s hockey final was India’s final event of the Asian Games. The victory took India’s medal tally to 21 gold medals and 85 medals overall.
