YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was detained by Delhi Police at his residence in Sector 56, Gurugram, on Saturday morning, according to sources. Rathee had reportedly travelled to Delhi to attend a planned protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at
Jantar Mantar. The demonstration aims to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
According to the information available, Delhi Police personnel entered Rathee’s residence at around 7:48 am after his mother opened the door. Around 50 police personnel had reportedly gathered outside the house late on Friday night.
Police took Rathee into custody from his family’s residence in Central Park Vihar, Sector 56, Gurugram, ahead of the planned demonstration in the national capital.
Dhruv Rathee Questions Security Measures Ahead of Protest
On Friday, Rathee accused the central government of placing Delhi under an “almost lockdown” before the CJP protest scheduled for Saturday, October 10. The demonstration calls for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign.
In a video posted on Instagram, Rathee questioned the extensive security arrangements and transport restrictions introduced ahead of the event. He referred to planned Metro station closures, train cancellations and a temporary suspension of mobile internet services in parts of central Delhi.
“How are you, friends? I have arrived in Delhi. And I saw what arrangements our Prime Minister has made here. More than 50 metro stations have been shut down," Rathee said in the video.
He also claimed that the authorities had disrupted several transport services ahead of the demonstration.
“Trains have been shut down. Buses have been cancelled. And they are almost putting Delhi on lockdown because of our protests," he added.
Rathee questioned why the authorities had introduced such extensive restrictions if, as he claimed, BJP-associated social media accounts were predicting that only a small number of people would attend the protest.
“On one hand, your IT cell people are saying that no one will come to our protest. If there is no crowd, then why are you doing all this if there is no crowd? I don’t understand," he said.
He then claimed that the government feared the public response to the demonstration.
“I think you are actually scared. Actually, the entire country’s population is awake," Rathee added.
Rathee also urged people to join the planned gathering at Jantar Mantar.
“Friends, if you are watching this, do come to Jantar Mantar on 10th October," he had said.
Delhi Police Strengthens Security Ahead of CJP Demonstration
Delhi Police has stepped up security across the national capital ahead of the planned protest. Authorities have introduced several measures that affect public transport, markets and communications.
The reported measures include the closure of markets and key Metro stations, the cancellation of dozens of trains heading to Delhi, and internet restrictions in parts of the city.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has also directed all states and Union Territories to coordinate with Delhi Police. The directive asks them to take steps to prevent protesters from travelling to the national capital.
The restrictions come as the CJP prepares to hold its demonstration at Jantar Mantar on October 10. The party plans to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Rathee’s reported detention in Gurugram came just hours before the scheduled protest, amid heightened security and restrictions across Delhi.
