Mandhana, Shafali Power India Women to a Dominant Win Over Zimbabwe in 2nd T20I, Seal Series 2-0
India Women defeated Zimbabwe Women by nine wickets with 67 balls to spare in the second T20I, powered by explosive half-centuries from Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma.
India Women cruised past Zimbabwe Women by nine wickets with 67 balls to spare in the second T20I of the three match series in New Raipur. After restricting Zimbabwe to 102/8, India chased down the target comfortably, securing a commanding victory. Smriti Mandhana led the chase with an unbeaten 47 off 25 balls, while Shafali Verma smashed 55 off just 25 deliveries. The victory also gave Mandhana her first series win as India's full-time captain. The Indian openers made light work of the target, putting together a 96-run partnership that left Zimbabwe with little chance of defending their total.

Zimbabwe Struggle to Score Freely in the Powerplay

Zimbabwe opted to bat first but found it difficult to score against India's disciplined bowling attack. They faced 71 dot balls during their innings, reflecting their struggles to find gaps and maintain momentum on a slow, gripping surface. In the first T20I, opener Kelis Ndhlovu had helped Zimbabwe maintain a reasonable scoring rate with a fighting 42. This time, however, India's bowlers prevented the visitors from building a strong foundation. At the toss, Mandhana had stressed the need for India to "be more disciplined with the ball". Kranti Gaud and Nandani Sharma delivered on that plan by sharing the new ball and maintaining good lengths. They also made effective use of the movement in the air and the grip available from the pitch. Zimbabwe managed only 20/1 during the powerplay. Ndhlovu was dismissed for a duck off 11 balls after attempting to hit through the line but losing her shape against Nandani's delivery. Her opening partner, Beloved Biza, also failed to capitalise on her start. Just two deliveries after the powerplay ended, she stepped down the track to attack Deepti Sharma but could only send the ball towards Harmanpreet Kaur at extra cover.

Mugeri-Tiripano and Nkomo Help Zimbabwe Reach 102

Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano and captain Josephine Nkomo provided Zimbabwe with some resistance through patient batting and smart shot selection rather than aggressive power-hitting. Mugeri-Tiripano used the reverse sweep effectively, particularly against Shree Charani after the spinner came into the attack in the 10th over. She struck two consecutive fours with the shot, helping Zimbabwe add some valuable runs. She eventually scored 34 off 32 balls, although India missed opportunities to dismiss her earlier. Shafali Verma dropped a straightforward catch off Charani in the 12th over, while Kranti Gaud missed another chance at long-on in the following over. Niki Prasad made an immediate impact after being introduced into the attack for the 15th over. She dismissed Mugeri-Tiripano and then removed Nyasha Gwanzura with her next legitimate delivery. With that double strike, Prasad became only the fourth bowler in women's international cricket to take two wickets with her first two legitimate deliveries. Nkomo remained at the crease during the closing overs, scoring 27 from 35 balls. Although she struggled to accelerate, her presence helped Zimbabwe bat through their allotted overs and cross the 100-run mark. The visitors finished on 102/8. Mandhana used seven bowling options during the innings, with five of her bowlers taking at least one wicket. India's disciplined approach with the ball ensured that Zimbabwe never gained the momentum needed to post a competitive total.

Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana Dominate the Chase

India's openers approached the chase with far greater intent than Zimbabwe's batters had shown earlier. Mandhana and Shafali attacked from the beginning, punishing loose deliveries and taking advantage of gaps in the field. India raced to 76 without losing a wicket by the end of the powerplay. The pair combined aggressive stroke play with well-timed shots, making it difficult for Zimbabwe's bowlers to settle into a consistent line and length. Mandhana regularly used her feet to disrupt the bowlers' rhythm. Zimbabwe struggled to contain the Indian captain, with several deliveries drifting too wide outside off stump or straying onto the batters' pads. The opening pair scored 84 of their combined 96 runs through boundaries, underlining their dominance during the partnership.

Mandhana and Shafali Lead India's Rapid Scoring

The fifth over of the powerplay proved particularly expensive for Zimbabwe. Off-spinner Nyasha Gwanzura came under attack as Mandhana struck four consecutive boundaries, sending the ball over cow corner, long-off, deep square leg and long-off again. Mandhana then gave Shafali the strike for the final delivery of the over. The right-handed batter stepped down the track and lofted the ball over deep extra cover with an inside-out shot, continuing India's aggressive approach. Shafali maintained the momentum and reached her half-century in just 24 balls. She eventually departed after mistiming a shot and finding a fielder at long-on in the eighth over. By that stage, India needed only seven more runs to complete the chase. Anushka Sharma came in at No. 3 but managed just one run from four deliveries before Mandhana finished the match at the other end. The Indian captain sealed the victory with a clean six over extra cover, remaining unbeaten on 47 off 25 balls.

India's nine-wicket win highlighted the difference between the two teams' batting performances. Zimbabwe struggled to score consistently against India's bowlers, while Mandhana and Shafali chased down the target with an attacking display that secured the win with plenty of deliveries to spare.Zimbabwe had struggled on the same Raipur pitch in the opening T20I on Friday, when they scored 114/5 after being asked to bat first by Mandhana, who was taking charge as full-time captain for the first time. Their performance in the second match was even less productive, as they managed only 102/8. Zimbabwe captain Josephine Nkomo may have hoped that India would suffer another early collapse, similar to the first game when the hosts slipped to 19/4 during their chase. However, India responded with an emphatic batting display to secure a comfortable victory. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
