Punjab FC came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Mumbai City FC in ISL 2026-27, with Gurkirat Singh scoring a late equaliser after Leandro Otormin’s second-half penalty.
Punjab FC and Mumbai City FC shared the points after playing out a 1-1 draw in their MG Indian Super League 2026-27 encounter at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi on Monday. Mumbai City took the lead in the 63rd minute through Uruguayan striker Leandro Otormin, who converted a penalty. However, Punjab FC fought back in the closing stages, with former Mumbai City forward Gurkirat Singh scoring his first goal for the club in the 90th minute to secure a draw for the hosts.

Punjab FC Start Strong with Aggressive Pressing

Punjab FC began the match with an aggressive pressing approach, making the contest intense and physical from the opening minutes. The hosts created the first scoring opportunity in the fourth minute when Rishikanta Meitei attempted a right-footed long-range shot. However, Mumbai City goalkeeper TP Rehenesh reacted well to keep the effort out. Punjab continued to put pressure on the visitors through quick transitions and high-intensity pressing. Mumbai City, meanwhile, looked to create opportunities through counterattacks and attacks down the wings. Mumbai City were forced to make an early substitution after Vikram Partap Singh suffered an injury following a tackle involving Rishikanta Meitei. Farukh Chaudhary came on to replace him. Brandon Fernandes nearly opened the scoring for the Islanders shortly afterwards, but Punjab goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh came off his line at the right moment to make an important save. Punjab also made a first-half substitution in the 36th minute, bringing on Bishu Singh for Meitei. The hosts came close to taking the lead in stoppage time before the break. Khaiminthang Lhungdim unleashed a left-footed effort from distance, but the ball struck the angle of the woodwork and stayed out. Neither side managed to find the net before half-time, leaving the score at 0-0.

Otormin Gives Mumbai City the Lead from the Penalty Spot

Mumbai City started the second half with greater attacking intent. Valpuia delivered a cross into the box for Farukh Chaudhary, but the forward could not make the necessary connection with his header. Punjab made another change in the 55th minute, introducing Gurkirat Singh in place of young forward Vishal Yadav. The visitors broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute after Bijoy Varghese stepped on PN Noufal's ankle inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to award Mumbai City a spot-kick. Otormin stepped up and calmly converted from 12 yards, sending a powerful shot beyond Arshdeep Singh to give the Islanders a 1-0 advantage. Mumbai City head coach Manolo Marquez made a double substitution four minutes later. Tluanga replaced Brandon Fernandes, while Wilmar Jordan came on for goalscorer Otormin. Punjab responded with two changes of their own, introducing Sanathoi Meitei and Arshvir Singh for Muhammad Suhail and Diego Raposo as the hosts searched for an equaliser.

Gurkirat Singh Scores Late to Rescue a Point for Punjab FC

Punjab's substitutions proved decisive as the home side found a breakthrough in the final minute of regulation time. Sanathoi Meitei produced an accurate cross from the left flank, delivering the ball perfectly into the penalty area. Gurkirat Singh found space inside the box, rose above the defenders and headed the ball into the net to make it 1-1 in the 90th minute. The goal was Gurkirat's first for Punjab FC and came against his former club, Mumbai City FC. His late equaliser ensured that the hosts avoided defeat and earned a valuable point. Despite Mumbai City's second-half lead, Punjab's persistence paid off as both teams finished the contest with a share of the points.
