Pete DeJoy, co-founder of Astronomer, broke his silence after becoming the company’s interim CEO on Saturday. His appointment followed a viral scandal involving former CEO Andy Byron. DeJoy now aims to refocus the company and move past the controversy.
Scandal Forces Leadership Change
Last month, a video of Andy Byron surfaced online. It showed him in an intimate moment with Kristin Cabot, Astronomer’s head of human resources, during a Coldplay concert in Boston. The video quickly gained national attention.
Soon after, Byron resigned from his position as CEO. The company’s board reacted swiftly by appointing DeJoy as interim chief. At the same time, they began searching for a new permanent leader.
DeJoy Calls Media Attention “Surreal”
Addressing the situation publicly, DeJoy described the media focus as “unusual and surreal.” He admitted that few startups in the data and AI sector ever face such public scrutiny. Still, he expressed confidence in the company’s future, saying he is ready to lead through the crisis.
DeJoy Shares Vision in LinkedIn Post
In a detailed statement on LinkedIn, DeJoy reflected on Astronomer’s journey. He wrote, “Over the weekend, I stepped into the role of Interim CEO at Astronomer, a company that I’ve proudly poured my entire professional life into helping build.”
He highlighted the company’s growth. What started as a tool to help firms work with Apache Airflow has grown into a platform that supports major data and AI strategies. He noted, “We’re privileged to sit at the center of our customers’ data & AI strategy.”
Company Built on Resilience
DeJoy underlined the company’s resilience. He recalled how Astronomer survived several challenges. From losing their bank to expanding during the COVID-19 pandemic, he said the company overcame every hurdle.
He stated proudly, “And yet, we’re still here.”
Focus on Employees and Customers
Looking ahead, DeJoy promised to focus on employees and customers. “I’m stepping into this role with a wholehearted commitment to taking care of our people and delivering for our customers,” he said.
He also reassured stakeholders about the company’s strong foundation. He pointed to the thriving Apache Airflow community and said Astronomer’s opportunity to build a leading DataOps platform in the AI age is “massive.”
Mission Bigger Than Any Scandal
DeJoy closed his message with determination. He said Astronomer’s mission is “bigger than any one moment.” Despite the scandal, he promised that the company’s story is “very much still being written.”
Search for Permanent CEO Continues
Meanwhile, the company continues looking for a full-time CEO. As interim leader, DeJoy has committed to steering Astronomer through the crisis, restoring trust, and focusing on future growth.
