Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu jointly inaugurated a new Ministry of Defence building in Malé on Friday. This event marked another step forward in the growing defence ties between India and the Maldives.
India Supports the Construction
Built with India’s financial help, the eleven-storey structure overlooks the Indian Ocean. It will improve the strength and readiness of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and other law enforcement agencies.
Modi Calls It a Symbol of Trust
While speaking at the ceremony, Modi called the building a “concrete building of trust.” He added that it represents the “strong partnership” between the two countries.
Later, Modi posted on X, “President Muizzu and I inaugurated a new building of the Ministry of Defence in Malé. This is yet another instance of strong India-Maldives cooperation.”

India Provides More Help
In addition to the building, Modi handed over 72 vehicles and other defence equipment to the MNDF. He promised continued Indian support in improving Maldives’ defence capabilities. “India will continue to support Maldives in the development of its defence capabilities. Peace, stability and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region is our common goal,” he said.
External Affairs Ministry Backs Modi’s Remarks
According to a press release by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the new building stands as “a symbol of the strong and long-standing defence and security cooperation between the two countries.” It also said that this project will further boost the power of Maldives’ security forces.
Modi Gets Warm Welcome
Earlier in the day, Modi arrived in Malé from London as part of his two-nation tour. President Muizzu, along with several top ministers, welcomed him warmly at Velana International Airport.
Later, Modi received a traditional ceremonial reception and guard of honour at Republic Square.
