Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated two crucial road projects designed to reduce traffic congestion in Delhi, Gurugram, and nearby areas. The projects will also provide faster access to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
The projects include the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). Both are part of a larger decongestion plan for the National Capital Region (NCR).
Inauguration Ceremony
The event took place in Delhi’s Rohini. The program started just after noon, and the Prime Minister formally opened the projects around 1.30 pm. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini also attended the ceremony.
Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II)
UER-II stretches for 75.71 km, built in five packages — 54.21 km in Delhi and 21.5 km in Haryana.
-
The road connects Gurugram, west Delhi, and south Delhi with NH-44, providing a quicker route to Chandigarh, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir.
-
It will reduce traffic jams at Dhaula Kuan and on Delhi’s busy ring roads.
-
The project cost is ₹6,445 crore.
-
It is also an example of eco-friendly construction. Nearly 10 lakh metric tonnes of waste material recovered from Delhi’s landfills was reused for building the road.
Dwarka Expressway Key Sections
PM Modi also opened Packages 3 and 4 of the Dwarka Expressway on August 17.
-
These sections cover 10.1 km in Delhi.
-
A highlight is the 5.1 km tunnel that provides direct connectivity to IGI Airport.
-
The project improves connectivity between Delhi and Gurugram.
-
Earlier, in March 2024, the Prime Minister inaugurated Packages 1 and 2, covering the Haryana section — a 29 km stretch between Mahipalpur and Kherki Daula on NH-48.
PM’s Visit Before Launch
Before the inauguration function in Rohini, the Prime Minister walked along both the Dwarka Expressway and UER-II to inspect the newly completed infrastructure.
