South Africa Outclass Australia in Second ODI, Seal Series in Style
South Africa sealed another series win against Australia with an 84-run victory in the second ODI, led by Matthew Breetzke’s record and Lungi Ngidi’s five wickets.

South Africa clinically defeated Australia by 84 runs in the second ODI of the three-match series in Queensland. The victory followed a familiar pattern: solid batting set the tone, and disciplined bowling under lights finished the job. Matthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs played superb knocks and helped South Africa post a challenging total on the board.

Then came the role of the South African bowlers. Lungi Ngidi (5/42 in 8.4 overs) led the bowling attack and wrapped up the Australian batting line-up. Australia were bowled out again for under 200 inside 40 overs. Josh Inglis (87) tried his best but found little support apart from Cameron Green. With this victory, South Africa secured their fifth consecutive bilateral ODI series win against Australia, a streak dating back to 2016.

Breetzke Makes History

Matthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs struck half-centuries, building an 89-run stand for the fourth wicket. Their effort lifted South Africa to 277. Breetzke made history by becoming the first male cricketer to score fifty-plus runs in each of his first four ODIs.

Though South Africa lost quick wickets late—five for 44 in the last 10 overs—the total proved competitive. Stubbs, who finally reached his first international fifty after 16 innings, also dropped two catches, adding to his struggles in the field.

Ngidi Leads Bowling Attack

Nandre Burger and Lungi Ngidi led South Africa’s defence. Ngidi shone brightest, claiming 5 for 42, his second ODI five-wicket haul, both against Australia. His performance earned him Player of the Match.

Captain Temba Bavuma sat out due to workload management, while star pacer Kagiso Rabada missed the series with an ankle injury. Despite this, South Africa’s bowlers stepped up. Burger’s pace earned early rewards, while Ngidi dismantled Australia’s top order.

Within four overs, Australia were reeling at 7 for 2. Travis Head fell to Burger, caught by Aiden Markram. Soon after, Ngidi removed Marnus Labuschagne, caught behind by Ryan Rickelton.

Australia Struggle Again

Australia’s batting woes continued. For the second game in a row, only one batter made a meaningful score. This time, Josh Inglis fought hard with 87, but the rest collapsed around him.

The loss marked Australia’s third consecutive bilateral ODI series defeat. Worse, they have now lost four straight ODIs at home for the first time since 2009, all without crossing 200 runs. They have also lost seven of their last eight ODIs overall.

Australia’s Bowling Effort

Australia rotated seven bowlers, including three spinners. Adam Zampa, Head, and Labuschagne shared 17 overs, conceding 94 runs and taking five wickets. Among seamers, Nathan Ellis impressed with 2 for 46, while Xavier Bartlett did well with the new ball. Bartlett, playing only his third ODI, dismissed Markram for a duck and also removed Rickelton early.

Still, South Africa’s batters, especially Breetzke and Tony de Zorzi, counterattacked with flair. Breetzke hammered two sixes flicked over fine leg, showing his strength on the leg side. De Zorzi played crisp drives and straight hits before falling to Zampa for 28.

Key Middle-Order Contributions

Breetzke reached his fifty off 46 balls, staying patient during a boundary drought. Stubbs then grew in confidence, smashing Zampa for six and playing inventive shots against spin. Their partnership steadied South Africa after early losses.

Eventually, Breetzke mistimed a pull against Ellis and was caught in the deep, but his record-breaking start to ODI cricket continues to grab attention. Stubbs carried on, reaching his maiden ODI fifty. He and Wiaan Mulder added 48 runs, though both missed the chance to finish the innings strongly.

South Africa slipped late, losing Stubbs, Mulder, Muthusamy, and Burger cheaply. Yet by then, they had already posted enough runs for their bowlers to defend.

The bigger story was Australia’s continued decline in the format. For the first time, they have been bowled out in four consecutive ODIs at home without crossing 200 in any innings. Their struggles with both bat and ball raise concerns with major tournaments ahead. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
