PM Modi to Meet Trump in the US for Talks on Trade and Defense

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the United States for two days starting February 12. He will meet US President Donald Trump to discuss trade, defense, and other key issues.

Recent Talks Between Modi and Trump

On January 27, Trump and Modi spoke about the importance of India buying more American security equipment. Trump also emphasized the need for fair trade between the two countries.

Modi's Paris Trip Before Washington

Before heading to Washington, Modi will visit Paris. He will co-chair a symposium on artificial intelligence hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron on February 10-11. US Vice President JD Vance will represent the US at the event, as Trump was also invited but will not attend.

Meetings in Washington DC

Modi will arrive in Washington DC on the evening of February 12. His meeting with Trump is scheduled for the following day. This will be Modi’s first visit to the US since Trump’s second term began on January 20.

Strengthening India-US Relations

Modi's visit is significant as he will be one of the few foreign leaders to meet Trump early in his second term. India wants to strengthen economic ties with the US and simplify access for its nationals to skilled worker visas. Modi also hopes to avoid the tariffs Trump has threatened, citing India’s high import duties on US goods.

Trade Between the US and India

The US is India’s top trading partner. In 2023-2024, trade between the two countries exceeded $118 billion. India reported a $32 billion trade surplus, showing the importance of their economic relationship.
