The diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh have escalated following Sheikh Hasina’s visit to New Delhi. On Thursday, Bangladesh lodged a strong protest over "false and fabricated comments" allegedly made by the former prime minister. In turn, India condemned the recent vandalism of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence in Dhanmondi 32.
Bangladesh Protests Hasina’s Remarks
To begin with, Bangladesh handed a protest note to Indian acting High Commissioner Pawan Badhe. The note accused Hasina’s statements of "instigating instability" in Bangladesh. As a result, Badhe was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka to address the issue.
In response, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain stated that Hasina’s comments were "provocative" and could harm the sentiments of the younger generation. He emphasized, “We will see what steps India takes,” adding that Dhaka has continuously asked India to urge Hasina to avoid such actions. At this point, India has yet to provide a response.
India Condemns Dhanmondi Destruction
Meanwhile, India condemned the demolition of Rahman’s residence. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed regret, calling the act “regrettable.” He explained that the house was a symbol of Bangladesh's freedom struggle. Furthermore, he stated, “This act of vandalism should be strongly condemned.”
Bangladesh Admits the Mistake
On the other hand, Hossain acknowledged that the demolition was seen negatively, both domestically and internationally. He remarked, “We know it will come negatively.” Hossain explained that the act was an "expression of anger" and assured that the government would take steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
Disagreement Over Adani Deal
In addition, when asked about the Adani deal with India, Hossain openly criticized the agreement. He argued that the deal “was not a good one” and failed to protect Bangladesh’s interests.
India Supports a Peaceful Bangladesh
Finally, during his visit to Dhaka, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Mistri expressed India’s ongoing support for a "democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh." He also raised concerns about the challenges faced by minorities in the country, stressing the need for further attention to their plight.
