Bumrah Becomes Fastest Indian to 50 Test Wickets at Home
Jasprit Bumrah reached 50 Test wickets at home in record time, leading India to a strong start against West Indies in Ahmedabad.
Jasprit Bumrah made history on the opening day of the first Test against West Indies in Ahmedabad. He became the fastest Indian to take 50 Test wickets on home soil, reaching the milestone in just 1,747 balls.

He claimed the wicket of Johann Layne for 1 in the second session at Narendra Modi Stadium to achieve the feat. With this, Bumrah also equalled Javagal Srinath’s record as the quickest Indian pacer to reach 50 Test wickets by innings, doing it in 24 matches. Kapil Dev achieved it in 25 innings, followed by Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami with 27 each.

“This is a special milestone for me,” Bumrah said after the game. “I’m happy to contribute to the team and start the home season strongly.”

India’s bowling dominates West Indies

India bowled out the West Indies for just 162 runs on the first day. Mohammed Siraj led the attack with 4 wickets for 40 runs, while Bumrah picked up 3 for 32.

Kuldeep Yadav (2/25) and Washington Sundar (1/9) supported the pacers effectively as the visitors’ batting lineup crumbled. Only Justin Greaves (32), Shai Hope (26), and Roston Chase (24) offered some resistance before getting out.

“The team bowled really well today,” said Siraj. “Everyone contributed, and we executed our plans perfectly.”

India’s reply

In response, India started strongly with KL Rahul anchoring the innings. He remained unbeaten on 53 as India reached 121/2 at stumps, trailing by 41 runs.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (36) and debutant B Sai Sudharsan (7) fell after promising starts, leaving captain Shubman Gill on 18* alongside Rahul.

India’s strong start with both ball and bat sets the tone for a dominant home season in the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship.
