ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025: Australia and Sri Lanka Share Points After Rain-Abandoned Match
Rain forced the 5th ICC Women's ODI World Cup match between Australia and Sri Lanka in Colombo to be abandoned, giving Sri Lanka a point.

The 5th match of the ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2025 between Australia and Sri Lanka in Colombo was abandoned without a ball being bowled. Sri Lanka felt relieved to secure a point from their rain-hit clash against the world champions, Australia. The day before the game, and even on match day, conditions did not appear too severe. Both teams walked out before the toss to inspect the ground. However, the rain intensified quickly. Despite covering the entire field, officials had to abandon the match about two and a half hours after the scheduled start.

Teams’ Previous Form

The two sides entered the match with contrasting results in their opening games. Australia had beaten New Zealand by 89 runs in Indore, while Sri Lanka had lost to India by 59 runs via the DLS method in Guwahati.

Points and Standings

Australia continue to lead the points table with three points, while Sri Lanka moved up to fifth, though their net run rate remains negative at -1.255. Australia were favourites for this match, as they often are in the tournament. Historically, Sri Lanka have never defeated Australia in international cricket, across 11 ODIs and eight T20Is.

Impact on Upcoming Fixtures

The washout gives Sri Lanka a long break before their next match against England on October 11. They last played India on September 30 in the World Cup opener, creating a 10-day gap. Meanwhile, Australia had flown into Colombo from Indore on Thursday. They will stay in the city to face Pakistan on October 8 before traveling to Visakhapatnam for a match against India on October 9.
