India Prepare for South African Challenge

South Africa, led by Temba Bavuma, arrive in India on an eight-match winning streak. Recently, they ended their wait for an ICC trophy by defeating Australia at Lord’s in June. India have not lost a Test series at home to South Africa in 25 years, but given their 0-3 home loss to New Zealand last year, they cannot afford to be complacent.

Shubman Gill leads India in the absence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Notably, he impressed by drawing a 2-2 series in England. Bavuma called this a new era in Test cricket.

“It seems as if the new era has kicked in. Guys like Rohit, and before him, Kohli, have done their job. They put India on their mat and made India a team to be feared. Therefore, we need to stop them from dominating,” Bavuma said at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards.

He added, “This is my first time captaining in Test cricket in India. Also, many little stories make this series special. Together, they can make the game even more beautiful.”

Bavuma Warns of Spinner-Friendly Pitches

Bavuma expects India to use its spinner-friendly pitches. Historically, India dominate at home. They beat South Africa 3-0 in 2015/16 and 2-0 in 2019.

“In India, pitches favor spinners. Hence, we won’t be shocked. Teams always use conditions to their advantage, especially in the WTC cycle,” Bavuma said.

He noted that foreign spinners often struggle in India. “Indian spinners bowl differently at home. Consequently, foreign spinners must adjust. They bowl quicker or flatter.”

World Test Championship Context

The WTC adds more importance to the series. India sit third on the points table behind Australia and Sri Lanka, although they have played more matches. Meanwhile, South Africa starts its WTC campaign with this series.
