Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday highlighted the growing momentum in India-UK relations after his meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Mumbai. Starmer’s visit marks his first official trip to India since taking office.
During their bilateral talks, both leaders focused on strengthening trade, technology collaboration, and strategic cooperation. Modi noted that ties between the two nations have seen major progress in recent months.
“Under the leadership of PM Starmer, India and the UK relations have seen significant progress. In July this year, during my visit to the UK, we signed the historic Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA),” Modi said in a joint statement after the meeting.
The path-breaking India-UK CETA will create new job opportunities for youth, expand trade and benefit both our industries as well as consumers. In this context, PM Starmer and I discussed trade linkages and economic ties between our nations in the times to come. @Keir_Starmer pic.twitter.com/zs5obf7Hh7

Focus on Trade and Economic Growth
Both leaders held discussions on speeding up the implementation of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that India and the UK signed earlier this year. Starmer emphasised the significance of the deal, calling it a major milestone for both countries.
Calling the FTA "really important," Starmer said, "It's the biggest deal we've struck since we left the European Union. I think it's also the biggest deal that India has ever struck, so it's hugely important."
The FTA, signed in July 2024 during Modi’s visit to the UK, is expected to boost bilateral trade by £25.5 billion annually. The agreement also seeks to enhance investment, create new business opportunities, and strengthen the partnership in areas like clean energy, digital technology, and manufacturing.
Stronger Strategic Partnership Ahead
Besides trade, both sides also discussed ways to deepen defence cooperation, promote innovation, and enhance collaboration on global issues. Modi praised Starmer’s commitment to expanding ties and expressed confidence that the partnership will continue to grow stronger.
The meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming their shared vision for a modern, forward-looking relationship built on trust, mutual respect, and economic opportunity.
