Ranchi Royals opened their account in the Men’s Hero Hockey India League 2025–26 season with a dramatic victory over defending champions Shrachi Bengal Tigers. Playing at home, the Royals pulled off an incredible comeback, scoring four goals in the last six minutes to secure a 4-1 win and collect all three points.
Tigers Start Strong With High Press
The match began with the Bengal Tigers showing their champion pedigree. They pressed high up the field and forced Ranchi into mistakes early. The visitors earned a penalty corner in just the second minute but failed to score. Ranchi responded through Sam Lane, who created a chance in the fifth minute that led to a penalty corner, though his effort was blocked.
Both goalkeepers were busy in the opening quarter. Ranchi custodian Suraj Karkera made a crucial save in the ninth minute to keep his side level. Despite attacking intent from both teams, neither could find the net, and the first quarter ended scoreless.
Tigers Strike Despite Being a Man Down
The tempo stayed high in the second quarter. In the 25th minute, Bengal broke the deadlock even while playing with one man fewer due to a green card. Abhishek sent a powerful ball into the circle, and Ketan Kushwaha calmly deflected it into the goal. The strike made Kushwaha, the youngest player in the league, the scorer.
Ranchi looked for a quick reply. Captain Tom Boon came close just before halftime, but Tigers goalkeeper James Carr produced an outstanding save to deny him. At the break, Bengal held a narrow 1-0 lead.
Defensive Discipline Keeps Tigers Ahead
In the third quarter, the Tigers focused on protecting their advantage. They switched to a five-man defensive line and absorbed pressure. Ranchi tried to stretch the field by attacking from the wings, but the Bengal defence stayed well organized.
The Tigers earned several penalty corners and looked capable of doubling their lead. However, Ranchi’s defence stood firm, with Manpreet and Yashdeep making key interventions. As the third quarter ended, Bengal still led 1-0 and appeared on course for a tight win.
Boon Sparks Dramatic Turnaround
The match changed completely in the final quarter. In the 54th minute, Tom Boon stole the ball from a Tigers player, combined quickly with a teammate, and smashed a reverse hit into the net to equalise. The goal lifted the home crowd and transformed Ranchi’s energy.
Just two minutes later, experienced forward Mandeep Singh struck to put the Royals ahead for the first time. Bengal’s defence began to unravel as Ranchi attacked with confidence and speed.
Late Goals Seal Emphatic Win
Ranchi kept pushing forward, and their pressure paid off again in the 58th minute when Lachlan Sharp scored to make it 3-1. With the Tigers struggling to respond, Boon struck once more in the final minute to complete the comeback and seal a dominant 4-1 victory.
Sam Lane Shines as Royals Build Momentum
Sam Lane was named Player of the Match for his tireless work in midfield and his role in driving Ranchi’s attacking play. The emphatic win marks a major boost for Ranchi Royals and could prove to be a turning point as they aim to build momentum in the 2025–26 HIL season.
