Accord Tamil Nadu Dragons defeated the Ranchi Royals 4-2 in a dramatic shootout in the Men’s Hero Hockey India League 2025-26 on Wednesday. The league match ended 3-3 at full time after an intense battle between the two sides.
With the shootout win, the Dragons earned a valuable bonus point. However, the Ranchi Royals had enough points to finish second on the table. As a result, they set up a high-profile Qualifier 1 clash against the Kalinga Lancers on Friday.
Playoff picture becomes clearer
The result also confirmed Hyderabad Toofans’ place in the playoffs. Meanwhile, JSW Soorma Hockey Club face a tough task. They must beat SG Pipers by a massive seven-goal margin in their final league game to grab the fourth playoff spot ahead of HIL GC.
Royals make a flying start
The Ranchi Royals began the match at full pace and took the lead inside the first minute. After a quick passing move, Maxime Van Oost fired a close-range shot. Mandeep Singh reacted sharply to the rebound and scooped the ball into the net from a very tight angle to make it 1-0 within 28 seconds.
The Royals doubled their advantage in the ninth minute from a penalty corner. Tom Boon’s initial drag-flick was blocked, but the captain recovered quickly and finished past Dragons goalkeeper David Harte. The Royals nearly added a third soon after, but Harte stretched out to deny Manmeet Singh’s powerful effort.
Dragons fight back before half-time
The tempo dropped slightly in the second quarter, but the Dragons slowly grew into the game. Despite the Royals looking dangerous in attack, it was the Dragons who struck next. Blake Govers converted their first penalty corner in the 24th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Goals flow in the second half
The Dragons carried their momentum into the third quarter. After a touch from Govers, Karthi Selvam was perfectly placed to tap the ball in from close range and level the scores at 2-2.
The Royals responded quickly. Tom Boon scored his second goal of the night with a penalty stroke, restoring his team’s lead at 3-2.
Late drama forces shootout
In the final quarter, the Dragons continued to push hard. Their persistence paid off in the 53rd minute when Blake Govers struck again from a penalty corner to make it 3-3.
The Royals came close to snatching a late winner. Araijeet Singh fired a reverse tomahawk from the edge of the circle, but Dragons goalkeeper Suraj Karkera made a crucial save. With no further goals, the match went to a shootout.
Dragons stay calm under pressure
In the shootout, the Dragons held their nerve. Nathan Ephraums, Blake Govers, Uttam Singh, and Tom Craig all converted their chances. The Dragons won the shootout 4-2 and claimed the extra point.
