At least six people from Punjab lost their lives after a tourist boat capsized in the Yamuna river in Vrindavan on Friday afternoon. Rescue operations are still in progress as authorities continue to search for those missing.
So far, six bodies have been recovered from the river.
Pilgrims from Ludhiana Among Victims
District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh confirmed the incident and shared key details. According to officials, around 30 pilgrims from Ludhiana were on the boat when it overturned.
Out of them, 16 to 17 people have been rescued safely, while search efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining passengers. To speed up the operation, teams from the Army and disaster response forces have been deployed.
Massive Rescue Operation in Progress
Rescue work is being carried out by teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force, along with nearly 50 local divers.
A local diver, Gulab, said that around 15 people have been pulled out of the river so far.
Leaders Express Grief Over Incident
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. In his statement, he said:
“Deeply pained by the mishap due to the capsizing of a boat in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. My condolences to those who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. The local administration is assisting those affected," PM’s statement reads.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also took note of the incident and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
Compensation and Relief Measures Ordered
CM Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to immediately reach the accident site and ensure proper assistance to those affected. He also instructed authorities to provide compensation to the families of those who died in the accident.

As rescue teams continue their efforts, the focus remains on finding the missing passengers and providing support to survivors. The tragic accident has raised concerns about safety measures for boats operating in the Yamuna river.
