IPL 2026: CSK Climb to Fifth Spot After Dramatic Win Over LSG
Urvil Patel’s record-equalling 13-ball fifty powered Chennai Super Kings to a thrilling five-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants at Chepauk.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) cruised past Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by five wickets in the 53rd match of IPL 2026 at Chepauk. After being invited to bat first, LSG posted 203/8 on the scoreboard in 20 overs.

Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh gave LSG a blazing start and added 77 runs for the first wicket in just 5.1 overs. When Jamie Overton dismissed Josh Inglis in the 10th over, LSG were cruising at 112/3. However, LSG lost wickets in the middle overs. Jamie Overton (3/36 in 4 overs) and Anshul Kamboj (2/47 in 4 overs) slowed things down and demolished the middle order. Shahbaz Ahmed and Himmat Singh then added a useful 50 runs for the seventh wicket. LSG eventually finished at 203/8 in 20 overs.

While chasing, Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad gave CSK a flying start. They added 45 runs in 3.4 overs before Digvesh Rathi dismissed Sanju Samson in the fourth over. Urvil Patel came in at No. 3 for CSK and added a blazing 81-run partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad for the second wicket. He scored a blistering half-century in just 13 balls, which is also the fastest half-century in IPL history. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Urvil Patel now share the record for the fastest half-century in IPL history.

When Shahbaz Ahmed dismissed Urvil Patel, CSK were cruising at 126/2 in 9.2 overs. After that, CSK lost a few wickets, but Shivam Dube and Prashant Veer guided the team across the finish line with four balls to spare. Shahbaz Ahmed (3/30 in 3 overs) remained the most successful bowler for LSG, while Digvesh Rathi also picked up two wickets.

With this win, CSK gained two crucial points and now sit in fifth position with 12 points, while LSG remain at the bottom of the table with 6 points.

Game-Changing Knock That Shifted Momentum

Urvil reached his fifty in just 13 balls. When he arrived at the crease, CSK had only a 38.13% chance of winning. When he left, the number jumped to 93.02%. The crowd stood up in applause as he walked back, and even the coaching staff acknowledged his impact.

His explosive batting completely changed the match situation and pushed CSK up to fifth place in the standings.

Inglis Sets the Tone Early for LSG

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) began with an unusual move. Mitchell Marsh gave up his usual opening role so Josh Inglis could attack from the start.

Inglis immediately targeted spinner Akeal Hosein. He hit him for three straight boundaries in the first over. When CSK switched to pace bowling, Inglis adapted quickly. He used ramps and innovative shots repeatedly to keep the scoreboard moving.

Data shows no player has attempted more ramps (four) inside the powerplay this season. Even when he missed shots, he kept finding gaps and scoring opportunities.

He reached 77 runs off just 25 balls in six overs. Only a few players have scored more runs in the powerplay in IPL history, including Suresh Raina (87 vs PBKS in 2014), Travis Head (84 vs DC in 2024), and Jake Fraser-McGurk (78 vs MI in 2024).

Noor Ahmad and Overton Bring CSK Back

Once the field spread, CSK’s middle-over bowlers took control.

Noor Ahmad delivered a match-winning spell against Nicholas Pooran. Pooran managed just two runs from nine balls against him. Noor’s form has improved sharply. In his first three matches, he conceded heavily. But in the next eight games, he has taken 12 wickets at a much better economy rate.

Reports suggest MS Dhoni advised him to rely more on his legbreak instead of overusing the googly. This change helped him aim more at the stumps and improved his results.

Jamie Overton also played a key role on a pitch that had already helped CSK earlier in the season. He reduced Inglis’ scoring opportunities after the powerplay and built pressure with consistent dot balls. He bowled 10 dot deliveries in his first 18 balls and took two important wickets.

LSG collapsed to 56 for 5 after 50 balls. Shahbaz Ahmed added a late six to push the total beyond 200.

Urvil’s Explosive Start Shakes the Bowling Attack

Urvil Patel’s innings began with pure aggression. He smashed five sixes and a four in quick succession. His hitting forced bowlers to adjust their lines and lengths constantly.

At one stage, bowler Digvesh Rathi even bowled a delivery far outside the hitting zone, showing clear respect for Urvil’s power-hitting ability.

Urvil had entered the IPL with a reputation for extreme strike rates, with a boundary every two balls on average. He continued that approach without hesitation.

LSG bowlers struggled to contain him. Most of his sixes came over midwicket, where he repeatedly cleared his front leg and powered the ball into the stands.

At one point, he was just short of breaking the record for the fastest IPL fifty. He reached 41 off just 8 balls and even had a chance for six sixes in an over. However, he slowed down slightly afterward, scoring only nine runs off the next five deliveries.

He eventually fell for 65 off 23 balls. At that stage, CSK still needed 78 runs from 64 balls, but his innings had already set the foundation for a strong chase.
