Colombia secured a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds after defeating DR Congo 1-0 in Guadalajara. A late goal from Daniel Munoz proved enough to seal a second consecutive victory and send Colombia into the last 32.
Backed by a passionate crowd, Colombia dominated large parts of the match and created numerous scoring opportunities before finally finding the breakthrough in the closing stages.
The result lifted Colombia to the top of Group K, while DR Congo now face a must-win situation in their final group match if they hope to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
Munoz Delivers the Decisive Moment
After threatening throughout the contest, Munoz finally made the difference in the 76th minute. A clever pass from Juan Fernando Quintero found the attacking wing-back inside the penalty area. Munoz struck the ball with his left foot, and a slight deflection off a defender wrong-footed goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi before the ball slipped into the net at the near post.
The goal sparked celebrations among Colombian supporters and ultimately secured qualification for the knockout stage.
Colombia Waste Several Early Chances
Colombia could have taken control of the match much earlier. Munoz almost opened the scoring within four minutes when a rebound fell kindly to him after a save from Mpasi. However, he fired his effort into the side netting from close range.
Moments later, Munoz thought he had scored after following up his own saved header and bundling the ball into the net. The celebrations were short-lived, though, as he was ruled narrowly offside.
Colombia continued to attack relentlessly during the opening stages and repeatedly tested the DR Congo defense. Despite their dominance, they could not find a way past Mpasi, who kept his side in the game with several important saves.
Diaz Misses Golden Opportunity
The pressure continued after halftime. Star winger Luis Diaz had a golden chance to break the deadlock in the 50th minute. With only Mpasi to beat, Diaz failed to find the target.
The rebound then fell to Jhon Arias, but he dragged his shot wide. As missed opportunities piled up, it appeared Colombia might be heading toward a frustrating evening despite controlling the game.
Quintero and Munoz Finally Break Through
Colombia eventually found the breakthrough thanks to a moment of quality from Quintero. The experienced playmaker slipped a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Munoz, who timed his run well before firing toward goal.
Although the shot took a fortunate deflection, Colombia fully deserved the lead after creating the better chances throughout the match.
DR Congo Push Late but Fall Short
After conceding, DR Congo increased the pressure in search of an equalizer. The African side pushed more players forward and attempted to force a late comeback. However, Colombia's defense remained composed and successfully protected the advantage until the final whistle.
The narrow victory reflected Colombia's overall superiority across the 90 minutes.
Munoz Continues Outstanding Tournament
While Colombia boast attacking stars such as Diaz and James Rodriguez, it has been Munoz who has emerged as one of the team's standout performers at this World Cup. The Crystal Palace wing-back has now scored in back-to-back matches and continues to be a constant attacking threat from the right flank.
Against DR Congo, he could easily have scored more than once. He regularly found space behind defenders and timed his forward runs perfectly.
His ability to arrive late in dangerous positions has become a key weapon for Colombia and gives opponents another major threat to worry about alongside Diaz and Rodriguez. At 30 years old, Munoz is enjoying one of the best periods of his career and has become one of the most influential players in his position during the tournament.
Colombia Eye Group Victory
With two wins from two matches, Colombia have already secured qualification and sit comfortably at the top of Group K. They will face Portugal in their final group-stage match in Miami, with first place in the group potentially on the line.
Meanwhile, DR Congo must defeat Uzbekistan in Atlanta and hope other results go their way if they want to reach the knockout rounds. For now, Colombia can celebrate another impressive performance and a place in the World Cup's last 32, thanks largely to the decisive contribution of Munoz.
