FIFA World Cup 2026: Ousmane Dembele’s Hat-Trick Powers France into World Cup Round of 32 With 4-1 Win Over Norway
Ousmane Dembele scored a brilliant first-half hat-trick as France defeated Norway 4-1 to finish top of Group I and advance to the FIFA World Cup knockout stage.

France finished the FIFA World Cup group stage in style with a convincing 4-1 victory over Norway on Thursday. The win helped Les Bleus secure first place in Group I and book their place in the knockout stage.

Ousmane Dembele produced a sensational display by scoring a first-half hat-trick. The 2025 Ballon d'Or winner led France's attack from the opening whistle and played the biggest role in his team's dominant victory.

France will now face one of the best third-placed teams from Groups C, D, F, G or H in the Round of 32. Norway also advanced after finishing second in the group and will meet Ivory Coast in the knockout stage.

Dembele Steals the Show

France made a fast start and took control of the match early. Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring just seven minutes after kickoff. He continued to trouble the Norwegian defence and completed his hat-trick within the first 32 minutes.

His clinical finishing put France in complete control before halftime and highlighted why he has been one of the world's best players over the past year.

Mbappe Creates Constant Danger

Although Kylian Mbappe did not score, he remained one of France's most influential players. The French captain struck the underside of the crossbar in the opening minutes and came close on several other occasions.

Mbappe also created two goals for his teammates by providing two assists. He finished the match with a team-high expected goals (xG) figure of 0.41 and constantly stretched Norway's defence with his pace and movement.

Norway Rotate Squad but Stay Competitive

Norway entered the match with qualification already secured. Coach Stale Solbakken rested several key players, including star striker Erling Haaland, ahead of the knockout stage.

Despite the changes, Norway created several good scoring opportunities. Thelo Aasgaard scored in the 21st minute to reduce the deficit and keep Norway in the contest.

Early in the second half, Norway had a chance to score again when they were awarded a penalty. However, France goalkeeper Mike Maignan made an excellent save to deny Jorgen Strand Larsen from the spot. Although Norway lost the match, the performance of their rotated squad gave the coaching staff several positives ahead of the Round of 32.

France Head Into Knockout Stage Full of Confidence

France completed the group stage as unbeaten Group I winners after another impressive attacking performance. Dembele's hat-trick and Mbappe's creativity underlined the strength of France's attack as they prepare for the knockout rounds.

Les Bleus will now face a third-placed team in the Round of 32, while Norway will take on Ivory Coast as both teams continue their FIFA World Cup journey.
