Senegal produced a stunning performance to defeat Iraq 5-0 at Toronto Stadium on Saturday and keep their FIFA World Cup knockout hopes alive. The emphatic victory also made history as the biggest win ever recorded by an African nation at a FIFA World Cup.
The Lions of Teranga dominated the match from start to finish, taking full advantage after Iraq were reduced to 10 men in the first half. The result moved Senegal into fifth place in the best third-placed standings, where they are currently on course to face England in the Round of 32. Iraq, meanwhile, bowed out of their first World Cup since 1986 without earning a point.
Diarra Gives Senegal the Perfect Start
Senegal began the match with far greater intensity than they had shown in their opening two group games. Their fast start paid off in the fourth minute. Abdoulaye Seck delivered an excellent cross from the right, and Habib Diarra rose above the defence to head the ball into the corner and give Senegal an early lead.
The goal immediately put Iraq under pressure and lifted Senegal's confidence.
Red Card Changes the Match
Iraq's situation became much worse in the 13th minute. Rebin Sulaka pulled down Sadio Mane just outside the penalty area as the Senegal captain raced through on goal. The referee initially showed a yellow card, but VAR reviewed the incident and upgraded it to a red card.
The dismissal left Iraq with 10 players for more than 75 minutes and handed Senegal complete control of the contest.
Iraq Resist Before Halftime
Despite being a man down, Iraq defended with determination for the remainder of the first half. The team reorganised its defence and managed to frustrate Senegal for long periods. Substitute goalkeeper Jalal Hassan, who came on before the second half, also produced an excellent save to keep the score at 1-0. For a brief period, Iraq looked capable of limiting the damage.
Senegal Dominate the Second Half
Senegal completely took over after the break. In the 56th minute, Ismaila Sarr doubled the lead after calmly finishing Lamine Camara's accurate cut-back.
Only 89 seconds after coming off the bench, Pape Gueye made an instant impact. He scored with his first touch by curling a superb shot into the far corner. Gueye struck again in the 71st minute with a powerful effort that flew into the net at 132 km/h, giving Jalal Hassan no chance.
Ndiaye Completes Historic Victory
Senegal continued to attack until the final whistle. In the 82nd minute, Iliman Ndiaye drove in from the right before unleashing a powerful long-range strike that found the back of the net.
The goal completed a remarkable 5-0 victory and secured the biggest World Cup win ever achieved by an African nation.
Senegal Stay Alive in the Tournament
The commanding victory significantly boosted Senegal's chances of reaching the knockout stage. They now sit fifth among the best third-placed teams and are currently set to face England in the Round of 32.
For Iraq, the defeat ended their first FIFA World Cup campaign since 1986. Despite showing resilience after the red card, they could not stop Senegal from producing one of the tournament's most dominant performances.
