FIFA World Cup 2026: Egypt Reach Knockout Stage After Dramatic Draw, Iran Face Nervous Wait for Qualification
Iran's World Cup hopes remain uncertain after VAR ruled out a stoppage-time winner in a dramatic 1-1 draw against Egypt, while the Pharaohs advanced to the knockout stage.

Iran's hopes of reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage remain uncertain after they fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against Egypt. A dramatic stoppage-time winner was ruled out for offside after a VAR review, leaving Iran waiting to learn whether they will qualify as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.

Egypt had already secured a place in the Round of 32 before kickoff. The draw helped the Pharaohs finish second in the group with five points, behind Belgium on goal difference. Egypt will now face Australia in the knockout stage on July 3 in Dallas.

Iran ended the group stage with three points and must now rely on results in other groups to keep their World Cup campaign alive.

Fast Start Produces Two Early Goals

The match got off to a lively start as Egypt opened the scoring inside five minutes. Mohamed Salah played a key role in the attack before the ball reached Mahmoud Saber. His effort slipped through the hands of Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand to give Egypt an early lead.

Iran responded immediately.

Mehdi Taremi won a penalty soon after, but Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir made an excellent save to deny him. Moments later, Shobeir produced another fine stop, but Ramin Rezaeian reacted quickly and scored from a tight angle on the rebound to level the match in the 14th minute.

Match Slows After Explosive Opening

After the fast-paced opening exchanges, both teams struggled to create clear scoring opportunities. Egypt looked comfortable knowing qualification was already secured, while Iran gradually took more control as they searched for a winning goal. The game became physical and scrappy, with neither side able to break the deadlock for much of the second half.

VAR Breaks Iranian Hearts

The match burst back into life in the closing minutes. Mehdi Taremi came within inches of scoring when his powerful header crashed against the crossbar.

Deep into stoppage time, Shoja Khalilzadeh appeared to score the goal that would have sent Iran into the knockout stage. His finish sparked huge celebrations as Iran's substitutes and coaching staff rushed onto the pitch. However, the celebrations ended moments later.

After a VAR review, officials ruled Khalilzadeh offside, and the goal was disallowed. The decision reduced Iran's celebrations to disappointment and left their qualification hopes depending on other results.

Egypt Advance While Iran Wait

The draw confirmed Egypt's place in the Round of 32 for the first time. The Pharaohs finished second in the group behind Belgium and will now take on Australia in the knockout stage.

Iran, meanwhile, finished third with three points. Their World Cup future now depends on whether that total is enough to secure one of the eight best third-place qualification spots.

Emotional Atmosphere in the Stands

The match unfolded in front of a passionate crowd that included large groups of both Egyptian and Iranian supporters. Some Iranian fans waved pre-revolutionary flags and booed Iran's national anthem before kickoff.

The fixture was also designated as the "Pride Match" by local organisers, with several rainbow flags visible inside the stadium. Despite the charged atmosphere, the event passed without any incidents off the pitch.
