Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has reportedly met Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei to discuss Iran’s military and economic situation. The meeting took place as tensions remained high over the ongoing US-Israeli war against Iran and days after Israeli media raised questions about Khamenei’s health.

Iran’s state broadcaster Press TV reported on Sunday that the discussions covered military developments, economic pressures and measures to meet the needs of the Iranian population.

The meeting also comes shortly after Iran released footage appearing to show Khamenei in good health, following reports that he was in an “extremely critical condition”.

Pezeshkian And Khamenei Discuss Iran’s War Situation

According to Press TV, Pezeshkian and Khamenei reviewed the current situation surrounding the conflict and discussed its possible future developments. The two leaders reportedly focused on military developments and the challenges facing Iran as the war continues.

They also discussed ways to ensure that essential resources remain available to the public and how the government can manage its finances during the conflict. Economic issues involving the Iranian rial, foreign currency and energy were reportedly part of the discussions.

The leaders also examined ways to strengthen Iran’s economic engagement with foreign countries and maintain access to resources despite the pressure created by the conflict.

Mojtaba Khamenei Account Confirms Meeting

The meeting was also mentioned by a Farsi-language X account attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei. "In this meeting, detailed discussions were held on the country's issues and problems, particularly the provision of the people's livelihood needs, the current conditions of the third imposed war and the future ahead, developments in the military domain, solutions regarding the provision of resources and management of expenditures--"rial, foreign currency, and energy"--as well as economic interactions with foreign parties," the post said.

The statement highlighted the importance of maintaining supplies for ordinary Iranians while managing government spending during the conflict.

Meeting Comes After Reports Of Khamenei’s Critical Health

The meeting has gained additional attention because it followed reports about Khamenei’s health.

Earlier on Sunday, Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency released an undated video that appeared to show the Supreme Leader in good health.

The footage emerged shortly after Israeli media outlets reported that Khamenei was in an “extremely critical condition” and had reportedly been taken to a hospital.

Channel 14 cited sources inside Iran when reporting concerns about his health. The Jerusalem Post also cited IranWire and sources close to Pezeshkian’s administration while reporting that questions about Khamenei’s condition were circulating among Iran’s leadership.

Iranian authorities have not confirmed the Israeli reports about a serious deterioration in Khamenei’s health.

The release of the video and the reported meeting with Pezeshkian appear to underline Iran’s effort to demonstrate that the Supreme Leader remains involved in major national decisions.

Pezeshkian Enters Third Year As Iran President

The meeting also took place as Pezeshkian entered his third year as Iran’s president.

Pezeshkian won Iran’s presidential election on July 5, 2024, and was elected president on July 6. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei formally appointed him on July 28, and he took the presidential oath on July 30.

His election followed the death of then-President Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash.

Pezeshkian has since faced major political, economic and security challenges. The ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel has added further pressure on his administration.

Mojtaba Khamenei Has Not Appeared Publicly

Mojtaba Khamenei became Iran’s Supreme Leader after his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in joint US-Israeli military strikes on February 28.

Since taking over the position, Mojtaba Khamenei has not made a public appearance.

Instead, he has communicated through written statements.

His continued absence has led to repeated speculation about his health, whereabouts and ability to manage Iran’s leadership during the conflict.

The latest reported meeting with Pezeshkian provides another indication that Khamenei remains involved in discussions over Iran’s military and economic affairs. However, the lack of a live public appearance continues to fuel questions about his condition.

Iran Faces Military And Economic Pressure

The reported meeting also highlights the challenges facing Iran as the conflict continues.

The leadership is dealing with military developments while also trying to maintain supplies of food, energy and other essential goods.
