Asian Games 2026: India Beat China 1-0 to Win Women’s Hockey Gold
India ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games women’s hockey gold by beating China 1-0, with Lalremsiami’s goal and Savita Punia’s crucial save securing the title and an LA 2028 Olympic quota.
India defeated China 1-0 in the women’s hockey final to win the gold medal at the Asian Games 2026. Lalremsiami Hmarzote scored the only goal of the match in the 10th minute, while goalkeeper Savita Punia produced a crucial penalty stroke save to help India protect their narrow lead. The victory ended India’s 44-year wait for a women’s hockey gold at the Asian Games. India last won the title in 1982. It is only the country’s second women’s hockey gold in the history of the continental competition. The triumph also secured India a quota place for the LA 2028 Olympics.

Lalremsiami Scores on 200th Appearance

Lalremsiami made her 200th international appearance memorable with a brilliant goal. Her strike gave India the early advantage and ultimately proved decisive. India also secured their sixth gold medal of the day. The result took the country’s overall gold medal tally at the Asian Games to 16. However, India had to spend long periods defending their lead. China increased the pressure, especially during the second and third quarters. The Indian defence responded with determination. Players repeatedly put their bodies on the line and blocked China's attacks. India absorbed one wave of pressure after another but refused to surrender their advantage.

Savita Punia Makes Crucial Save

Savita Punia played a major role in India’s victory. The experienced goalkeeper produced an outstanding save from a penalty stroke in the second quarter. That stop helped India maintain their 1-0 lead at a critical stage of the final. China continued to search for an equaliser, but India’s defence stayed organised and disciplined. The Indian players fought hard throughout the match and protected their narrow advantage until the final whistle.

India Strike in the First Quarter

The final started after an hour-long delay. The team buses got caught in heavy traffic while travelling to the stadium. Once play began, China immediately looked to attack. India, however, handled the early pressure well. India then created the decisive opening in the 10th minute. Sakshi Rana sent a well-timed pass into the circle towards Lalremsiami, who was positioned near the goal. Lalremsiami controlled the opportunity and produced a powerful reverse-stick shot while moving forward. The ball flew into the upper part of the net, giving the Chinese goalkeeper no chance. India took a 1-0 lead and then focused on defending it.

India Hold On for Historic Gold

China continued to attack after falling behind and created pressure throughout the match. India had to remain alert and defend for long stretches. The Indian team showed remarkable resilience as China pushed for an equaliser. The defence blocked attacks, cleared danger and protected Savita Punia. Despite China's sustained pressure, India kept their opponents from scoring. The final whistle confirmed a historic 1-0 victory for India. The gold medal ended a 44-year wait for India’s women’s hockey team. It also gave the team a direct quota place for the LA 2028 Olympics, adding another major achievement to their Asian Games triumph.
