US President Donald Trump has paused his reciprocal tariffs for 90 days. He announced the decision on his social media platform, Truth Social. Previously, he launched these tariffs on what he called ‘Liberation Day’. Now, he has taken a sharp turn from that stance.
He ended his message with, “Thank you for your attention.”
Stock Markets React Positively
As a result of this pause, stock markets around the world saw relief. The decision aims to calm global trade tensions and stop rising panic in financial sectors.
China Faces Tougher Tariffs
While Trump offered a pause for many nations, he raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 125%. He blamed China’s recent tariff hikes on U.S. products.
He stated, “Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the world’s markets, I am hereby raising the tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125 per cent, effective immediately.”
Trump added, “At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realise that the days of ripping off the USA and other countries are no longer sustainable or acceptable.”
Negotiations Are Ongoing
At the same time, Trump clarified that this pause is not a step back. Instead, it gives space for ongoing talks with over 75 countries. These nations have contacted U.S. departments like Commerce, Treasury, and USTR.
He explained, “On the other hand, since more than 75 countries have reached out to US officials... and because these countries have, at my strong urging, not retaliated against the US, I have approved a 90-day pause.”
Moreover, he added, “During this time, a reduced reciprocal tariff of 10 per cent will apply, effective immediately.”
Again, he concluded his post with, “Thank you for your attention to the matter.”
Critics Slam Trump’s Behavior
However, critics remain unconvinced. They argue that Trump seeks public attention. Many opponents and analysts have labeled him an attention seeker and narcissist.
According to various reports, Trump has consistently shown a strong need for the spotlight. Furthermore, some psychologists say he displays narcissistic traits such as grandiosity and a need for constant admiration.
EU Sees Success in Its Unity
Meanwhile, Friedrich Merz, Germany’s expected next chancellor, praised the pause. He believes it proves that the EU’s united trade stance works.
He said in an interview with RTL, “Europe is ready to defend itself, and this proves that staying united is our greatest strength.” He also pushed for tariff-free trade between the U.S. and Europe.
European Leaders Compete for Influence
In addition, French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer appear to be in a quiet race to lead Europe. Both leaders have taken active roles in handling continental security issues.
This rivalry became more obvious during past conflicts. For instance, Trump threatened to cut U.S. military and intelligence aid during the Ukraine crisis after a public argument in the Oval Office. A similar situation occurred during the current tariff standoff.
