A strong earthquake shook Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region on Wednesday. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) confirmed the tremor. The quake struck during the day and caused alarm in the surrounding areas. The seismic activity added to a series of recent earthquakes across Asia.
Magnitude Revised After Initial Reading
Initially, the EMSC reported the earthquake as a magnitude 6.4. However, after reviewing the data, they later downgraded it to 5.6. Earthquake magnitudes are often updated after experts analyze the full wave patterns. The change shows how early estimates can shift once more accurate readings come in.
Location and Depth of the Quake
The EMSC stated that the quake occurred at a depth of 121 kilometers, which is about 75 miles beneath the surface. Deep earthquakes like this are less likely to cause surface damage compared to shallow ones, but they can still be widely felt. The epicenter was located 164 kilometers east of Baghlan, a city in northern Afghanistan. Baghlan has a population of approximately 108,000 people. Although the epicenter was far from major population centers, tremors may have been felt across several provinces.
No Immediate Reports of Damage
As of now, there are no official reports of casualties or damage from the earthquake. However, given the mountainous terrain and remote villages in the region, authorities may need more time to assess the full impact. Earthquakes are common in Afghanistan due to its position on the boundary of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
Recent Earthquake Activity Across Asia
The tremor in Afghanistan is part of a wave of recent earthquakes across Asia. Just hours earlier, another earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippines. That quake also measured 5.6 in magnitude. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the event, and AFP cited their findings. Although both quakes occurred in different countries, the timing has raised concerns among seismologists about regional tectonic shifts.
Seismic Risk in the Hindu Kush Region
The Hindu Kush is known as a high-risk seismic zone. The region lies on several fault lines and often experiences moderate to strong earthquakes. Past quakes in this area have caused serious damage, especially in rural communities with fragile infrastructure. For example, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake in March 2023 shook parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, causing dozens of deaths and injuries.
Communities Remain Alert
Although Wednesday’s earthquake did not cause immediate destruction, local authorities and residents remain cautious. Emergency services in Afghanistan are already stretched due to conflict and limited resources. Relief agencies often struggle to respond quickly in remote mountainous areas. Experts continue to monitor seismic activity in the region. They advise people to stay prepared, especially in earthquake-prone zones like the Hindu Kush.
