Shubman Gill couldn’t have imagined a better start as India’s new Test captain. After scoring a century in Leeds during his captaincy debut, he delivered a career-defining performance at Edgbaston.
In the first innings, he scored a superb 269, followed by a dominant 161 in the second innings. His twin centuries earned him the Player of the Match award and helped India beat England by 336 runs to level the series.
Karthik Sees Shades of Kohli in Gill
Former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik praised Gill’s leadership and batting. On the Sky Cricket podcast, he said Gill reminded him of Virat Kohli.
Karthik shared, “Athers, you spoke about Virat Kohli. I met him a few days ago, and this talk about captaincy came up. He said people think ‘I’m a great Test cricketer. I enjoyed my Test batting, which I did, but the fact is that getting my captaincy was the best thing to happen in my life.’ Why I am saying this is that the same line was used by Shubman Gill.”
Gill’s Mindset Reflects Leadership Maturity
Karthik explained that Gill is thinking like a true leader. He said, “He said ‘I used to bat differently, but now that I’ve got captaincy, I almost think this is what my team requires, rather than me wanting to do something individually as a batter.’ I said wow, this is something for which the world of cricket has to take notice.”
He added that Gill, at just 25 years old, has already shown maturity beyond his age. Karthik believes Gill has all the qualities of a future great. He said, “Here is a man who has the appetite, he’s got the skill, he’s got the technique, but now he’s got the mindset as well. I’m the captain, I’m going to lead from the front, lead off the front foot.”
Focus Shifts to Lord’s After Commanding Win
Despite the remarkable win at Edgbaston, Gill knows his journey as captain has only just begun. His side won by a huge 336-run margin, showing complete control in all departments.
However, the series is still alive. India will now shift its focus to the next match at Lord’s, one of cricket’s most iconic venues. Gill will aim to continue his form and add another chapter to India’s history in England.
