Hundreds of BEST employees will march on August 6, 2025, demanding their unpaid gratuity and other dues. This march, organised by the BEST Workers’ Union, will begin at Veer Hutatma Bhai Kotwal Udyan in Dadar and end at the BEST Wadala bus depot.
Meanwhile, union leaders have criticised the administration for ignoring their repeated requests.
Retired Employees Still Waiting
Over 4,500 retired workers, who left after August 1, 2022, are still waiting for their gratuity. According to the union, this delay clearly violates the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972, and breaks previous agreements.
As a result, many retired workers are facing serious financial and emotional difficulties. Union leader Shashank Rao said, “For us, this is about justice, not charity.”
Repeated Requests Ignored
Earlier, the union sent letters and held several meetings with the BEST administration. However, officials failed to act.
Later, on July 11, the union organised a large meeting at Dr. Shirodkar Hall in Parel. Both current and retired workers attended. In this meeting, everyone agreed to intensify protests if their demands remained unmet.
Union Demands Long-Term Solution
Besides pending dues, the union also wants a permanent solution to prevent future delays. Rao stated, “We demand the administration take immediate steps to clear all pending dues and create a permanent system to avoid such delays going forward.”
Therefore, the protest aims to protect both current and future retirees.
Large Turnout Expected
Consequently, union leaders expect thousands of workers to join the August 6 protest. They believe this could be the largest demonstration in BEST’s history. One leader said the protest will clearly show the unity and determination of the workforce.
