Elina Svitolina had a memorable day at the Australian Open, mirroring her husband Gael Monfils' achievement by knocking out a top-ranked opponent in the third round. The couple’s victories added a special touch to the tournament.
Svitolina Triumphs Over Jasmine Paolini
Svitolina, representing Ukraine, defeated Italy's Jasmine Paolini 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. This win came just hours after Monfils stunned Taylor Fritz on the same court. Monfils watched from Svitolina’s coaching box as they both secured spots in the last 16 of the year's first Grand Slam.
“It was a crazy battle today. I got inspired after my husband’s win,” Svitolina said. “I watched a little bit of that match; of course, it was tough to miss.”
A Strong Comeback After a Tough Start
Svitolina struggled in the first set, losing five consecutive games. However, she adjusted her approach in the second set, taking the ball earlier and using powerful forehands to move Paolini around. This strategy helped her win the second set and dominate the third.
“To be fair, I played so bad in the first set I had to really push through,” Svitolina admitted. “I’m really happy with the way I came back into the match. Really happy with the performance in the end.”
Next Match Against Veronika Kudermetova
Svitolina will next face unseeded Russian Veronika Kudermetova, who defeated Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-4, 6-2.
Paolini’s Impressive Season Ends Abruptly
In 2024, Paolini made history as the first Italian woman to reach the last 16 at all four Grand Slams in the Open Era. She also won the Dubai title and reached major finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. However, her Melbourne run ended in 1 hour and 46 minutes.
Gael Monfils’ Victory Over Taylor Fritz
On the same day, Monfils upset fourth seed Fritz, winning 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/1), 6-4. This marked the sixth time Monfils reached the last 16 in his 19th appearance at the Australian Open.
