Abhay Singh, a former aerospace engineer turned spiritual figure, has been expelled from the Juna Akhara in Prayagraj for breaching the Akhara’s strict code of conduct. Known as "IIT Baba," Singh’s removal followed allegations of using disrespectful language against his guru, Mahant Someshwar Puri. This decision highlights the Akhara’s emphasis on devotion and discipline in the sanyas tradition.
Controversial Actions Lead to Expulsion
Singh, a graduate of IIT Bombay, became popular at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 for his transition from a successful engineering career to spirituality. However, his comments about his guru and fellow seers violated the principles upheld by the Juna Akhara. Mahant Hari Giri, the Akhara’s chief patron, stated, "The actions of Abhay Singh violate the sacred guru-shishya tradition and the core principles of sanyas." Due to this, the Akhara’s disciplinary committee recommended his expulsion, and he is now banned from entering the Akhara's camp until he demonstrates respect and discipline.
Singh’s Spiritual Transformation
Abhay Singh hails from Sasarouli village in Haryana. After graduating in aerospace engineering from IIT Bombay, he worked in Canada, earning a lucrative salary of Rs 36 lakh annually. Despite his promising career, Singh sought a deeper purpose in life. This search led him to explore Sanskrit, philosophy, and spirituality, eventually leaving his career to embrace sainthood. His journey gained massive attention, especially after a viral interview at the Kumbh Mela, making him an overnight spiritual sensation.
Controversies Surrounding Singh’s Rise
While Singh’s spiritual journey inspired many, it was not without its controversies. His social media posts, particularly those where he referred to his father as "Hiranyakashyap" and his guru as "pagal" (mad), drew heavy criticism. These actions went against the values of the Juna Akhara, which led to his expulsion. The Akhara’s disciplinary committee found his behavior incompatible with the discipline of sanyas.
Singh’s IIT Achievements
Singh reportedly secured an AIR 731 rank in the IIT JEE 2008 exam, although this ranking has not been independently verified. His admission to IIT Bombay, one of India’s top institutes, reflects his academic excellence. In 2024, IIT Bombay continued its legacy of attracting the best talent, with the institute drawing a significant portion of the top JEE rankers in the country.
Singh’s Father Expresses Mixed Feelings
Singh’s father, Karn, a practicing lawyer, shared his mixed emotions over his son's spiritual journey. While proud of Singh’s academic achievements, Karn was disheartened by his decision to abandon a promising career for a monastic life. Karn first learned about his son’s spiritual transformation through social media. Despite the disappointment, Karn respects Singh’s choice and hopes that one day his son will return home. He believes Singh may have a greater purpose in spreading a spiritual message, although the family struggles with limited communication. Singh has blocked his family on social media for the past six months, making it difficult for them to connect.
The Spiritual Journey and Family’s Hope for Reconciliation
Karn recalled how Singh’s interest in spirituality became clear during a visit to a naturopathy center in Bhiwani after returning from Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. There, Singh’s fascination with meditation and philosophy began, signaling the start of his shift away from worldly pursuits. Despite the family’s sadness, they continue to respect Singh’s decision. They remain hopeful that, one day, he will return home, believing his spiritual journey is part of his path to self-discovery.
