The Janata Dal (United) in Manipur has withdrawn its support for the BJP-led Biren Singh government. The party’s lone MLA, Md Abdul Nasir, will now sit with the opposition in the state assembly.
BJP Government Stays Strong
Despite this move, the BJP’s position remains secure. The party holds 37 seats in the 60-member assembly. It also has backing from five Naga People's Front MLAs and three independents.
Why JD(U) Withdrew Support
JD(U) state chief Ksh Biren Singh wrote to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, explaining the decision. He stated, "In the election to the state assembly of Manipur held in February/March 2022, six candidates set up by JD(U) were returned. After a few months, five MLAs of JD(U) defected to BJP. Trial under the Tenth Schedule of India of the five MLAs is pending before the Speaker's Tribunal."
The party aligned with the INDIA bloc, prompting the withdrawal. Singh added, "Support to the BJP-led government was withdrawn by JD(U)... as such, seating arrangement of the lone MLA of JD(U) in Manipur Md Abdul Nasir is made in the opposition bench in the last session of the Assembly by the Speaker."
JD(U)’s Performance in Manipur
In the 2022 Manipur assembly elections, JD(U) won six seats with 12% of the vote. However, five MLAs defected to the BJP in September that year. Nitish Kumar criticized this, asking, “Is it proper? Is it constitutional? Is it in line with established norms?”
Nitish Kumar’s Return to NDA
In January 2024, Nitish Kumar rejoined the NDA. He took office as Bihar’s chief minister for the ninth time. Following the Lok Sabha elections, where the BJP secured 240 seats, the JD(U) remained a key ally with its 12 MPs.
Bihar Gears Up for Elections
The BJP continues to play a central role in Bihar's coalition government. With assembly elections scheduled for October-November this year, alliances will be crucial in shaping political outcomes.
