While millions of pilgrims flock to the
Mahakumbh for a holy dip in the Sangam, many differently-abled individuals are arriving in Prayagraj for another reason. They seek free treatment and artificial limbs, offered at a special camp set up during the event.
A Charitable Initiative
Located among various sects and religious groups, the camp by Narayan Seva Sansthan, a Jaipur-based charity, is making a significant impact. Known for helping polio-affected individuals, the organization is now providing prosthetic limbs and mobility aids at no cost. Doctors and technicians are working tirelessly, ensuring visitors receive proper care.
Jaishankar Kumar from Balia, Uttar Pradesh, is one such visitor. After losing both legs to a severe infection two years ago, his life became a daily struggle. "I’ve been walking with crutches ever since. Artificial limbs were too expensive for me. When I heard they are free here, I came with my family," Kumar explained.
Free Prosthetics and Physiotherapy
After arriving at the camp, Kumar’s measurements were taken for prosthetic limbs. Meanwhile, he is undergoing free physiotherapy. "I’ve been told my limbs will be ready in ten days. The therapy is helping me prepare for using them," he shared.
Prosthetic specialist Krunal Chaudhary emphasized the team’s commitment. "Each limb costs around ₹90,000. However, we are providing them free of charge to contribute to this sacred event," he said. Already, over 50 individuals have had their measurements taken, and many are being trained to use their devices.
The Spirit of Mahakumbh
The Mahakumbh, held every 12 years, began on January 13 in Prayagraj and will last 45 days. So far, over eight crore pilgrims have participated. While the event is deeply spiritual, charitable acts like this camp add a layer of humanity.
Plans Beyond the Mahakumbh
The Narayan Seva Sansthan plans to continue its support even after the event. "We will distribute tricycles to the differently-abled after the Kumbh ends," said Jeetu, a prosthetic technician. He added, "We believe acts of service here bring spiritual merit. Everyone receives free treatment, regardless of their financial situation."
Accessibility for All
To make the Maha Kumbh more inclusive, the administration has introduced several facilities for differently-abled pilgrims. These include special toilets, ramps, braille signboards, golf carts, and e-rickshaws.
Overall, the Maha Kumbh is not only a religious event but also a beacon of hope for many, proving that service and spirituality can go hand in hand.
