Madison Keys made history on Thursday by reaching her first
Australian Open final. She defeated world number 2 Iga Swiatek in an intense match. The score was 5-7, 6-1, 7-6(8), and the battle lasted two hours and 32 minutes. Notably, Keys saved one match point to book her place in her second Grand Slam final, her first since the 2017 US Open.
Keys Stuns Swiatek in a Thrilling Third Set
Initially, Swiatek seemed poised to win as she served for the match at 6-5 in the final set. However, Keys fought back when Swiatek missed a backhand on match point. Subsequently, Swiatek double-faulted, allowing Keys to break and force a deciding tiebreak. With great composure, Keys won the tiebreak 10-8, securing her place in the final.
Strong Start, But Swiatek Takes the First Set
Early in the match, Keys broke Swiatek’s serve in the opening game, marking the first time Swiatek had lost her serve since the tournament's first round. Although Keys initially held the upper hand, both players traded three breaks each in a rollercoaster first set. Eventually, Swiatek clinched the set after 49 minutes of intense play.
Keys Dominates the Second Set
Despite losing the first set, Keys quickly turned the momentum in her favor. She broke Swiatek’s serve four times and delivered three aces in one game. As a result, Keys convincingly won the second set, forcing the match into a deciding third set.
Career-Best Winning Streak
Keys is enjoying her best form this season. Not only has she won 11 consecutive matches, but she also claimed the Adelaide title just a week before the Australian Open. This streak surpasses her previous career-best of 10 straight wins in 2022.
Keys to Face Sabalenka in the Final
Looking ahead, Keys will face world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the final on Saturday. Sabalenka, a two-time defending champion, leads their head-to-head record 4-1. Importantly, all of Sabalenka’s victories were on hardcourt, including two at Grand Slam events. However, Keys’ sole win came on grass during the 2021 Berlin tournament.
Sabalenka Aims for History
Earlier in the day, Sabalenka defeated Paula Badosa 6-4, 6-2 in the other semifinal. With this victory, she moved one step closer to becoming the first woman since 1999 to win three consecutive Australian Open titles.
Final Showdown
As the final approaches, excitement continues to build. Fans are eager to see whether Keys will continue her incredible run or if Sabalenka will make history. Regardless of the outcome, the Melbourne Park final promises to deliver high-stakes action.
