Australian Open 2025: Top Seeds Townsend and Siniakova Power Through to Women’s Doubles Final
Top seeds Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova secure a spot in the Australian Open women's doubles final after a thrilling 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3 victory over Andreeva and Shnaider.
Top seeds Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova advanced to the Australian Open 2025 Women's Doubles final. This marks their second Grand Slam final together. They defeated Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3 on Friday.

A Tight First Set

The first set was tightly contested. Both teams fought hard, with little to separate them. However, Andreeva and Shnaider narrowly edged out the tiebreak, taking the first set.

Second Set Turnaround

In the second set, Townsend and Siniakova regained control. Townsend’s solid net coverage and powerful groundstrokes played a key role in their success. Despite being broken while serving at 5-3, they immediately broke back and leveled the match at one set apiece. The third set began with another break from Shnaider, but Townsend remained composed. She served confidently to secure the victory and seal their place in the final.

Townsend Reflects on Her Calmness

Reflecting on her calmness, Townsend shared how this experience differed from her Wimbledon triumph. “It feels amazing,” she said. “Definitely different from Wimbledon, especially for me. Wimbledon, I was very excited, but we’ve been playing some really great tennis here. Now, I’m more calm.” She added, “It’s a first for me, and that’s a pretty cool experience to be able to be on tour for 12 years and still have firsts.”

Siniakova Talks About Their Strong Partnership

Siniakova, who began partnering with Townsend six months ago, discussed their strong chemistry. “The game style we have suits each other. Leftie, rightie is also helpful,” she said. Townsend agreed, noting, “We’re playing better as a team over the last couple of weeks than we were doing a couple of months ago.”

Facing Ostapenko and Hsieh in the Final

Looking ahead to the final, Townsend and Siniakova will face Jelena Ostapenko and Su-Wei Hsieh. The third seeds triumphed over Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-3, in a match full of momentum shifts.

Ostapenko and Hsieh’s Strong Chemistry

Despite playing contrasting styles, Ostapenko and Hsieh have great chemistry. “We don’t feel pressure when we’re down,” Hsieh said. “We’re always ready for every point and it’s easy to come back.” Ostapenko echoed her thoughts, adding, “We help each other when one is not feeling her best. This works really well.”

Ostapenko Looks Ahead to the Final

Ostapenko, who faced Hsieh in last year’s Australian Open final, emphasized their strong partnership. “I needed someone who plays good at the net because I hit the ball quite powerful,” she said. With the final approaching, she focused on their own game. “I think they’re good players, but we have to focus on our game and ourselves,” she said.
