A stampede broke out at the Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, early Wednesday. Thousands of devotees gathered for a holy dip in the Ganga on Mauni Amavasya. The massive crowd created panic and disorder at the ghats.
Emergency Response
Ambulances rushed to the scene. Medical teams transported the injured to the central hospital inside the Mela ground. Sources told the sources, on condition of anonymity, that at least 15 bodies had been brought to the hospital.
Crowd Control Measures
The growing crowd pressure during the Mauni Amavasya ‘Amrit Snan’ forced the Mela administration to send people back. Despite security arrangements, managing the enormous crowd at the Triveni Sangam proved challenging.
Authorities made repeated announcements, urging devotees to vacate the ghats after their holy bath. However, many pilgrims left without taking a dip due to the chaos.
Government’s Preparations
Expecting nearly 10 crore devotees, the Uttar Pradesh government had increased security and crowd management. Officials had advised devotees to treat all ghats as sacred and avoid misinformation. Helicopters were set to shower 25 quintals of rose petals on pilgrims.
Record-Breaking Footfall
In the last 17 days, the Mahakumbh Mela 2025 saw over 15 crore pilgrims take a holy dip. On Tuesday alone, more than 4.8 crore devotees participated, surpassing the 3.5 crore on Makar Sankranti’s Amrit Snan.
Tight Security Measures
Authorities deployed security personnel at every corner. AI-powered CCTV cameras and drones monitored the crowd. The Prayagraj administration declared the Mela area a no-vehicle zone for the next few days. They urged locals to use two-wheelers only for senior citizens' transportation.
The Significance of Amrit Snan
Amrit Snan, earlier known as Shahi Snan, is the most sacred ritual of Mahakumbh. Millions of devotees from across the world participate in this spiritual event.
Mauni Amavasya holds special significance. Many believe that on this day, the river waters turn into ‘Amrit.’ Jagatguru Sai Maa Lakshmi Devi told the sources, “Mauni Amavasya is not only important for us saints but for all Hindus. Those who observe silence on this day will experience spiritual growth.”
Medical Facilities on High Alert
For the second Amrit Snan, the UP government deployed over 1,000 medical professionals. Authorities set up modern medical facilities, including provisions for minor and major surgeries. A super-specialty hospital with 300 specialist doctors was prepared for emergencies.
The Mahakumbh Mela, held once every 12 years, began on January 13. It will conclude on Maha Shivaratri, February 26. Despite extensive planning, the recent stampede raises concerns about managing such a massive gathering in the coming days.
