Jamshedpur FC secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Punjab FC, strengthening their position in the Indian Super League 2024-25 standings.
Jamshedpur FC secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Punjab FC in the Indian Super League 2024-25 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi. As a result, they moved to third place in the standings with 31 points from 17 matches. Now, they are just two points behind second-placed FC Goa. Pratik Chaudhuri opened the scoring in the 41st minute with a powerful header. Then, Javi Hernandez doubled the lead early in the second half. Although Ezequiel Vidal pulled one back for Punjab FC, it was only a consolation. Consequently, Punjab FC’s winless streak extended to seven games (2 draws, 5 losses).

Punjab FC Starts Strong

From the very beginning, Punjab FC pressed aggressively and created early chances. In the 8th minute, Asmir Suljic set up Muhammad Suhail on the right wing. Immediately, Suhail delivered a sharp cross to Luka Majcen, but Albino Gomes made a crucial save. Meanwhile, Jamshedpur FC focused on counter-attacks. Javier Siverio and Mohammed Sanan looked threatening, especially from the left flank. However, Punjab FC’s defense remained solid. Later, in the 21st minute, Ricky Shabong nearly broke the deadlock after combining well with Suljic. He forced Albino Gomes into another save. Moreover, Punjab FC continued to control possession, with Majcen and Suhail actively involved in the attack.

Jamshedpur FC Strikes First

Despite Punjab FC’s pressure, Jamshedpur FC struck first. In the 41st minute, Pratik Chaudhuri rose above the defenders and headed Rei Tachikawa’s corner past Muheet Shabir. Surprisingly, the goal came against the run of play. After conceding, Punjab FC pushed harder for an equalizer. Suljic and Abhishek Meetei both took shots on target. However, Albino Gomes stood firm, ensuring Jamshedpur FC held their 1-0 lead at halftime.

Javi Hernandez Extends the Lead

At the start of the second half, Punjab FC made a change, bringing on Ezequiel Vidal for Filip Mrzljak. However, things quickly worsened for the hosts. In the 48th minute, a defensive mistake led to Jamshedpur FC’s second goal. Nikhil Prabhu passed back to Ivan Novoselec, who then played a weak ball to Muheet. At that moment, Javi Hernandez pressed aggressively, forcing Muheet to clear in a hurry. Unfortunately, the ball struck Javi and rolled into the net. Nevertheless, Punjab FC did not give up. In the 58th minute, Vidal responded with a stunning long-range strike. He curled the ball past Pratik Chaudhuri and into the bottom right corner, completely surprising Albino Gomes. Notably, this was the 10th goal Jamshedpur FC had conceded from outside the box this season.

Punjab FC Pushes for an Equalizer

In response, coach Panagiotis Dilmperis made attacking changes in the 60th minute. He introduced Petros Giakoumakis and Leon Augustine to add fresh energy to the front line. Meanwhile, Jamshedpur FC focused on defending their lead. In the 80th minute, Khalid Jamil made a tactical substitution by bringing on Stephen Eze for Rei Tachikawa. This move helped Jamshedpur FC strengthen their defense for the final moments. Then, in the 85th minute, Punjab FC had one last big chance. A loose clearance fell to Leon Augustine at the edge of the penalty box. He took a shot at the far post, but it lacked power. As a result, Pratik Chaudhuri easily cleared the ball. Despite Punjab FC’s persistent attacks, Jamshedpur FC remained disciplined and held on for their 10th win of the season.

Key Performer

Javi Hernandez played a crucial role in Jamshedpur FC’s victory. Not only did he score a goal, but he also contributed defensively. He made five clearances, two tackles, and one interception. Furthermore, he completed 28 out of 38 passes.
