Mohun Bagan Super Giant dominated city rivals Mohammedan SC with an emphatic 4-0 victory in the
Indian Super League 2024-25 season. The match, held at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Saturday, further solidified their position at the top of the table.
Early Breakthroughs
The Mariners wasted no time asserting their dominance. Subhasish Bose and Manvir Singh each scored twice, breaking through Mohammedan SC's defense early on. As a result, Mohun Bagan SG maintained a 10-point lead at the top, with 43 points, while FC Goa trailed in second place with 33. Additionally, goalkeeper Vishal Kaith reached a significant milestone, recording his 50th ISL clean sheet and becoming the first goalkeeper in history to achieve this feat.
Persistent Attacks
Mohun Bagan SG started strong, maintaining consistent pressure throughout. Their persistence paid off in the 12th minute when Liston Colaco sent in a precise corner kick. Mohammedan SC cleared the ball, but Jamie Maclaren swiftly seized the opportunity, passing to Dippendu Biswas. Biswas took a shot, but it was Subhasish Bose, perfectly positioned, who finished past goalkeeper Padam Chhetri. This goal marked Bose's fifth of the season, surpassing his total from all previous ISL campaigns, and gave Mohun Bagan SG a 1-0 lead.
Doubling the Lead
Manvir Singh extended the lead just eight minutes later, in the 20th minute. Jason Cummings delivered a pinpoint corner to the near post, where Manvir leaped highest to head the ball past Chhetri. With the score at 2-0, Mohun Bagan SG seemed unstoppable.
Cummings came close to adding another assist when he sprinted down the left flank and crossed to Maclaren. However, Mohammedan SC’s Florent Ogier reacted quickly, intercepting the pass to prevent further damage.
Defensive Resilience
After a short break, Mohammedan SC’s Carlos Franca made some dangerous runs, but the Mohun Bagan SG defense stood firm and thwarted his efforts. In the 43rd minute, the Mariners found the back of the net once again. Cummings took a free kick, which Maclaren flicked on. Subhasish Bose finished it off for his second goal, making it 3-0.
Mohammedan SC’s Challenges
Mohammedan SC's best opportunity came when Manvir Singh Saini connected with a Mirjalol Kasimov corner. His header appeared to be on target, but Vishal Kaith made a brilliant save, tipping the ball over the bar. Things worsened for Mohammedan SC when Kasimov, frustrated, kicked Tom Aldred. The referee issued a red card, sending Kasimov off just before halftime.
Second Half Developments
The second half started with Alexis Gomez nearly scoring from a free kick. Later, Cummings’ free kick created trouble for Padam Chhetri, who fumbled the ball. Manvir Singh almost capitalized, but Mohammedan SC’s defense cleared the danger. However, in the 53rd minute, Manvir scored again, heading in Cummings’ cross from the left wing to make it 4-0.
Strategic Substitutions
Coach Jose Molina made several changes, introducing Dimitrios Petratos and Abhishek Suryavanshi for Manvir Singh and Sahal Abdul Samad. Despite the substitutions, Mohun Bagan SG maintained control, with Cummings continuing to lead the attacking charge.
Late Opportunities
In the 74th minute, Petratos had a chance to add a fifth goal, receiving a pass from Liston Colaco and taking a shot. Chhetri saved it, but the rebound fell to Maclaren, whose follow-up attempt was blocked by Ogier. Despite several more chances, Mohun Bagan SG could not find the back of the net again. However, they secured their 13th win and their 11th clean sheet of the season.
Key Performer of the Match
Jason Cummings was undoubtedly the standout performer, contributing two assists and creating six chances. His work rate was exceptional, as he also made an interception and a tackle. Cummings completed 11 of 19 passes, showcasing his influence throughout the game.
Mohammedan SC will face Hyderabad FC on February 8, while Mohun Bagan SG will take on Punjab FC on February 5.
