Mumbai City FC and East Bengal FC played out a goalless draw at the Mumbai Football Arena in the
Indian Super League 2024-25 on Friday. This marked East Bengal FC’s 100th match in the ISL, and as a result, they moved to 10th place with 18 points from 18 matches. On the other hand, Mumbai City FC secured their seventh draw of the season, placing them sixth with 28 points from 18 games. Despite controlling 62.4% of possession, the Islanders struggled to break through East Bengal’s defense.
Early Threats and Missed Opportunities
East Bengal FC began the match with great intensity. Their attack worked in sync to open up Mumbai’s defense in the 14th minute. Dimitrios Diamantakos drew defenders toward him before spotting Naorem Mahesh Singh on the left. Mahesh then delivered a low cross for Nandhakumar Sekar at the far post. Despite a good first touch, Nandhakumar’s shot from a tight angle was saved by Phurba Lachenpa in the bottom-right corner.
Later, in the 44th minute, Diamantakos was at the center of attention again. David Lalhlansanga made a slick move on the right edge of the box, passing to Vishnu Puthiya, who then crossed to Diamantakos. However, the striker’s header missed the target, going wide on the left side.
In the final minute of the first half, Diamantakos pressed high and intercepted the ball from Jon Toral. He fired a shot from outside the box, but it struck the left post, marking East Bengal FC’s closest attempt of the match.
Second Half: Close Calls and Near Misses
At the beginning of the second half, Mumbai City FC had a golden opportunity. In the 49th minute, they outnumbered East Bengal in the attacking third. Bipin Singh crossed from the left, and Vikram Partap Singh tried to finish from close range. Unfortunately, Vikram lost his balance and missed the shot, which was only a few yards away from the goal.
East Bengal also wasted chances in the second half. Mahesh sprinted down the left but opted not to enter the box. Instead, he crossed the ball to Diamantakos, who rose to head it but hit the left post, missing his second opportunity of the game.
Ortiz’s Late Chances and Gill’s Stellar Saves
Jorge Ortiz replaced Thaer Krouma in the 63rd minute and had two great chances to score in the 81st minute. First, Yoell van Nieff found him in space inside the box, and Ortiz aimed for the center of the goal. However, goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill made an important save to deny him. Immediately afterward, Lallianzuala Chhangte passed the ball to Ortiz outside the box. Ortiz took another shot, but Gill was well-positioned again and saved it, keeping the score level.
Key Performer of the Match
Gill was a standout performer in the match. He completed 26 of his 45 passes, and more importantly, he made three crucial saves and one clearance. His solid performance in goal prevented Mumbai City FC from finding the back of the net.
