Indian Super League 2024-25: Chennaiyin FC Thrashes East Bengal FC 3-0 to Stay in Playoff Hunt
Chennaiyin FC ended their seven-match winless streak with a dominant 3-0 victory over East Bengal FC, keeping their playoff hopes alive.
Chennaiyin FC won 3-0 against East Bengal FC at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium in Kolkata in the Indian Super League 2024-25. As a result, Chennaiyin ended their seven-match winless streak. The victory moved them to 10th place with 21 points, keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Early Chance for East Bengal

East Bengal FC had an early chance in the 2nd minute. Vishnu Puthiya took a shot from distance, with Dimitrios Diamantakos passing him the ball. However, Chennaiyin goalkeeper Mohammed Nawaz made a strong save, denying the shot.

Chennaiyin FC Scores the First Goal

In the 13th minute, Chennaiyin took advantage of a mistake by East Bengal. Nishu Kumar mishandled the ball in his own box, and Wilmar Jordan Gil sent a pass to Connor Shields. Although Shields failed to control the ball properly, the situation became chaotic. Eventually, Nishu accidentally put the ball into his own net, giving Chennaiyin a 1-0 lead.

Chennaiyin FC Doubles the Lead

Just eight minutes later, Chennaiyin extended their lead. In the 21st minute, Irfan Yadwad crossed the ball to Wilmar, who finished the chance with ease, placing it into the bottom left corner. This made it 2-0 for Chennaiyin.

East Bengal Tries to Respond

East Bengal wasn’t ready to give up. In the 43rd minute, Saul Crespo attempted a long-range shot, but it flew over the top right corner of the goal. Shortly after, at the other end, Lalrinliana Hnamte crossed the ball for Vignesh Dakshinamurthy, but his shot was blocked, preventing a third goal for Chennaiyin.

Chennaiyin FC Keeps the Pressure

Chennaiyin continued to apply pressure in the second half. In the 54th minute, Hnamte crossed the ball to Lukas Brambilla, who had space to shoot. However, his attempt went wide of the left post, keeping the score at 2-0.

East Bengal FC’s Efforts Fall Short

East Bengal kept trying to find a way back into the game. In the 69th minute, Vishnu Puthiya crossed for Diamantakos, but his header went wide of the target. Then, in the 74th minute, Naorem Mahesh Singh and Richard Celis pressured the Chennaiyin defense. However, Nawaz made a crucial save, maintaining Chennaiyin’s clean sheet.

Chennaiyin FC Seals the Victory

Finally, Chennaiyin put the game to bed in added time. After defending a wave of pressure from East Bengal, Chennaiyin launched a counterattack. Kiyan Nassiri made a clever header pass to Daniel Chima Chukwu, who calmly finished into the bottom right corner, sealing a 3-0 victory for Chennaiyin.

Wilmar Jordan Gil (Chennaiyin FC) was a constant threat throughout the match. He completed 12 out of 20 passes, scored once, and played a key role in setting up the first goal.
