Chennaiyin FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant played out a goalless draw in the ISL 2024-25, with both teams failing to break the deadlock despite several chances.
Chennaiyin FC played a 0-0 draw against Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the Indian Super League 2024-25 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday. As a result, Mohun Bagan Super Giant remains at the top of the table with 37 points from 17 games. Meanwhile, Chennaiyin FC sits in 10th place with 18 points from the same number of matches.

A Cautious Start

The match began slowly, with both teams testing each other’s defenses. Chennaiyin FC made some early inroads, especially from Wilmar Jordan Gil, Connor Shields, and Irfan Yadwad. However, both sides struggled to create clear scoring opportunities in the first half.

Mohun Bagan Grows Into the Game

As the game progressed, Mohun Bagan Super Giant started to find their rhythm. Greg Stewart became more involved in midfield, while Asish Rai pushed forward down the right flank. The first real opportunity fell to Gil, who was set up by Kiyan Nassiri. However, Tom Aldred blocked Gil’s shot to deny him. Later, in the 35th minute, Gil had a golden chance but struck the post after meeting a cross from Shields.

End-to-End Action Before the Break

Towards the end of the first half, Suhail Bhat made a brilliant run and entered the penalty area but his shot hit the side netting. In the second half, Mohun Bagan’s Dimitrios Petratos had a chance from a free-kick but hit the side netting again. He had other chances but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Key Substitutions and Missed Opportunities

In the 60th minute, Vignesh Dakshinamurthy limped off, and Landinliana Renthlei replaced him. Both teams then made changes, with Mohun Bagan bringing on Liston Colaco and Manvir Singh. Despite their efforts, their final passes lacked precision. Chennaiyin FC also had a late opportunity in the 89th minute when Ryan Edwards headed a cross from Shields wide of the goal.

Key Performer

Connor Shields was the standout player for Chennaiyin FC. He created four chances, delivered nine crosses, and made a tackle. He completed 12 out of his 15 passes, showcasing his all-around performance. Next, Chennaiyin FC will face FC Goa on January 25, while Mohun Bagan Super Giant will take on Bengaluru FC on January 27.
