Selena Gomez Defends Film Role, Says She Has ‘No Regrets’ Despite Backlash
Selena Gomez defends her role in Emilia Pérez amid Karla Gascón's racism controversy, stating she has "no regrets" about her involvement in the film.
Selena Gomez has finally addressed the ongoing racism controversy surrounding her Emilia Pérez co-star Karla Sofia Gascón. In her statement, Selena made it clear that she has "no regrets" about her involvement in the Oscar-nominated film. She spoke up during a session at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, as reported.

Selena's Response to the Drama

When asked about the controversy surrounding Emilia Pérez, Selena responded confidently, saying, “I’m really good... Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just, I’m just grateful and live with no regrets.” She went on to emphasize, “And I would do this movie over and over again if I could.” Her heartfelt response was met with applause from the audience, and the video quickly gained attention on social media.

Karla Gascón Faces Backlash

Meanwhile, Karla Gascón, who plays the titular role in Emilia Pérez, has been facing backlash after past social media posts resurfaced. These posts contained racially insensitive remarks about Black people, immigrants, and Islam. In light of this controversy, Karla, who made history as the first openly transgender performer nominated for an Oscar in an acting category, has issued multiple apologies. She defended herself, explaining in an interview with CNN en Español, “I cannot renounce a nomination because what I have done is a job and what is being valued is my acting work. I have not committed any crime nor harmed anyone, I am not a racist.”

Co-Star Speaks Out

In response to the controversy, Karla’s co-star Zoe Saldana expressed her disapproval of the comments. She shared, “It makes me really sad because I don’t support (it), and I don’t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group.”

Director Cuts Ties

Additionally, Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard confirmed that he has severed ties with Karla over the issue. In light of the ongoing backlash, Karla has chosen to stop commenting on both the controversy and the film itself.
