Federal Judge to Rule on Musk’s Access to Treasury Data Amid Legal Battle
A federal judge is set to rule on whether Elon Musk's team can regain access to Treasury Department databases, amid legal challenges and concerns over privacy and security.

A federal judge is expected to make a quick decision regarding the Justice Department’s request to restore Elon Musk’s access to Treasury Department databases. These databases contain personal data of millions of Americans.

Judge’s Order Blocks Access

Initially, Judge Jeannette A. Vargas directed both parties to discuss potential amendments to an order issued by another Manhattan judge. This order currently blocks Musk’s team from accessing the information. If an agreement cannot be reached, Vargas will rule after reviewing the written arguments.

Government’s Argument

In response, the Justice Department is urging the court to lift the restriction immediately. They argue that blocking Musk’s team is illegal and that the decision made by Judge Paul A. Engelmayer should be reversed, claiming it is unconstitutional. Therefore, they want the judge to restore access to the records.

Attorney General Lawsuit

Earlier, 19 Democratic attorneys general, including New York's Letitia James, filed a lawsuit. They contend that Musk’s “DOGE” team, made up of political appointees, should not have access to sensitive Treasury records. These records are typically handled by trained civil servants, so the attorneys general are concerned about the potential risks.

Response from the Justice Department

The Justice Department’s attorneys argued that the ruling was unconstitutional. They emphasized that it undermines the President’s ability to properly supervise executive agencies, which is essential for good governance. Thus, they believe this interference must be reversed.

Musk and Vance’s Criticism

Furthermore, Musk and Vice President JD Vance have both criticized the court ruling. They argue that it undermines the fundamental principle of judicial oversight, which is crucial for maintaining the separation of powers. In fact, Musk went so far as to label the judge as “corrupt” and even suggested that he should be impeached.

Concerns Over Data Security

Meanwhile, experts have raised serious concerns about Musk’s access to Treasury records. They worry that such access could put Americans' personal data at risk, potentially compromising privacy and security.

Attorneys General Respond

In response to the Justice Department's argument, the attorneys general acknowledged that some modifications to Engelmayer’s order might be necessary. However, they insist that the essence of the order should remain intact, limiting access to Treasury records to career staff who have undergone background checks and received security clearances.

Musk’s Department of Efficiency

Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, created to reduce wasteful government spending, has gained both praise and criticism. While supporters believe the department can help cut unnecessary expenses, critics remain concerned about the potential misuse of sensitive data from the Treasury records.
