Google has renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” on its Maps app. The company explained that it follows official government naming practices. "As we announced two weeks ago and consistent with our longstanding practices, we’ve begun rolling out changes to reflect this update," Google said.
Local and Global Name Changes
In Mexico, users will still see the Gulf of Mexico. However, users in other countries will see both names. This change follows US President Donald Trump’s executive order. The federal Board on Geographic Names officially renamed the gulf on Monday.
"When official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name. Everyone in the rest of the world sees both names. That applies here too," Google added.
Trump’s Decision to Rename the Gulf
Trump’s first act as president was to rename the Gulf of Mexico. He believed the name should reflect the U.S., not Mexico. The Gulf is shared by the U.S., Mexico, and Cuba, and it is crucial for fishing, electricity, and shipping.
Gulf of America Day
Additionally, Trump declared February 9 as "Gulf of America Day." This day marks the signing of the executive order. The president also visited the Gulf, stating, “Today, I am making my first visit to the Gulf of America since its renaming. As my Administration restores American pride in the history of American greatness, it is fitting and appropriate for our great Nation to come together and commemorate this momentous occasion and the renaming of the Gulf of America.”
