Kangana Ranaut, actor and BJP leader, is known for speaking her mind. This time, she’s criticizing media outlets for failing to recognize the cultural significance of the traditional Ladakhi goncha. She shared her thoughts on Instagram Stories, expressing her disappointment.
Kangana Wears the Ladakhi Goncha
Recently, Kangana wore the goncha, a traditional woolen robe from Ladakh, while at her newly opened café in Manali, The Mountain Story. The goncha is an important symbol of Ladakh’s cultural heritage. However, Kangana was upset that the media failed to highlight its significance.
Disappointment Over Media Coverage
The goncha is made from thick wool, designed to protect the wearer from the cold Ladakhi climate. Kangana emphasized that such traditional attire deserves more recognition. She pointed out that the goncha can be just as beautiful—if not more so—than international gowns or branded dresses.
Kangana Calls Out Fashion Bloggers
In her Instagram Stories, Kangana called out fashion bloggers for their ignorance. She wrote, "Absolutely embarrassing that these so-called fashion bloggers have no knowledge, understanding, or consideration for mountain people, their culture, or traditions; everything is not anarkali. Not a single article called this dress traditional Ladakhi goncha. It is unfair and culturally inappropriate."
Promoting Local Traditions
Kangana went on to share images of Ladakhi women wearing the goncha. She explained, “For the unversed, this is Ladakhi goncha, also called kos or suleman… goncha can look more beautiful than international gowns or branded dresses.” She urged people to appreciate and promote local traditional attire, adding that India’s culture has so much to offer. To emphasize her point, she added the hashtag vocal for local.
Details of the Goncha
The goncha is a woolen garment that reaches the ankles, often adorned with intricate designs such as stripes, geometric shapes, and Buddhist motifs. The attire reflects Tibetan cultural influences, showcasing the historical ties between Ladakh and Tibet. Moreover, Ladakhi women wear the goncha with traditional jewelry made from silver, gold, and precious stones. A belt is typically worn to cinch the robe, completing the look.
