Modi and Musk Discuss Starlink, Electric Vehicles During Washington D.C. Meeting
PM Modi met Elon Musk in Washington, DC, discussing Starlink’s licence, electric vehicles, and strengthening India-U.S. ties ahead of his meeting with President Trump.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Thursday at Blair House in Washington, DC. During the meeting, they discussed several important issues, including Starlink’s pending licence approval in India.

I talked about India’s efforts towards reform and furthering ‘Minimum Government, Maximum Governance." Modi Posted on X after the meeting.

Starlink Licence Approval

Firstly, Modi and Musk focused on Starlink’s application for a licence. India supports Musk’s view that satellite spectrum should be assigned rather than auctioned. However, it’s important to note that Starlink’s application is still under review.

Seized Devices Affect Starlink Services

In addition, Musk mentioned that Starlink services are currently inactive in India. Authorities had seized two Starlink devices—one from an armed conflict zone and another linked to a drug smuggling case.

Electric Vehicle Talks

Moreover, the talks likely included discussions about sourcing electric vehicle components from India. Musk has frequently criticized India’s high import taxes on electric cars. Despite years of discussions, no concrete plans have been made to set up a local manufacturing base.

Modi's Other Meetings in Washington

Upon arrival in Washington, Modi also met U.S. Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard. They discussed various aspects of the growing India-U.S. relationship. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also met US National Security Advisor Michael Waltz on Thursday at Blair House in Washington, DC.

Upcoming Meeting with President Trump

Tomorrow, Modi is scheduled to meet U.S. President Donald Trump for a bilateral meeting in the Oval Office. This will take place in the early hours in India.

Tariffs and Trade on the Agenda

Furthermore, tariffs are a key issue. Trump has warned of possible "reciprocal" tariffs. Modi will aim to avoid a tariff clash and instead focus on securing a trade deal. The topic of illegal Indian immigrants will also be on the table.
