Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Washington DC early Thursday morning for a two-day visit to the United States. During this visit, he is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump for bilateral talks.
His two-day visit is at the invitation of US President Donald Trump. Modi has maintained a strong relationship with Trump since his first term, which sets the stage for important discussions during this visit.
“Landed in Washington DC a short while ago. Looking forward to meeting @POTUS Donald Trump and building upon the India-USA Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Our nations will keep working closely for the benefit of our people and for a better future for our planet,” Modi posted.

Trade Concerns Take Center Stage
Modi’s visit comes amid growing concerns in India over the US’s “America First” trade policy. With the US continuing to impose tariffs, Modi’s main objective is to prevent further trade penalties from Washington.
Focus on Key Areas of Cooperation
The two leaders are expected to focus on enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, energy, defense, technology, and immigration. Moreover, this will be their first meeting since Trump began his second term, and it is anticipated to have several important outcomes.
Deportations Spark Tensions
The timing of Modi’s visit is significant, as it follows the Trump administration’s controversial deportation of 104 Indian nationals. These individuals were reportedly handcuffed and shackled during the process, which sparked outrage in India. Consequently, the opposition has raised concerns about the treatment of migrants.
Tariffs and Trade Relations
Additionally, Trump recently imposed a 25% tariff on global steel and aluminum imports. This decision is expected to affect Indian companies that export steel and aluminum to the US. In response, India has taken a softer stance compared to Trump’s first term. According to reports, India may consider reducing tariffs in certain sectors if the US offers concessions in return.
Strong Economic Ties
In 2024, bilateral trade between India and the US reached USD 130 billion. Along with trade, the two leaders are also likely to discuss important topics, such as the situation in the Indo-Pacific, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and developments in West Asia.
