Trump Plans Meeting with Putin for Peace Talks, Rejects Ukraine’s NATO Membership
Trump stated that Ukraine’s NATO membership is "not practical" and expressed willingness to accept Russia's objection while pushing for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.

US President Donald Trump recently addressed Ukraine's bid to join NATO. He stated that it would not be “practical” to grant Ukraine membership. Trump also expressed willingness to accept Russia’s longstanding opposition to Ukraine’s NATO membership.

Trump’s Stance

When asked about Ukraine’s NATO membership, Trump responded, “I don’t think it’s practical to have it, personally.” He further added, “They’ve been saying for a long time that Ukraine cannot join NATO, and I’m OK with that.” Therefore, he appears to align with Russia’s position on this matter.

Phone Calls with Putin and Zelenskyy

Earlier, Trump held phone calls with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Following these calls, the leaders agreed to begin negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. As a result, diplomatic efforts are moving forward despite ongoing tensions.

Ukraine’s NATO Application

Ukraine submitted its application for NATO membership in September 2022, after Russia annexed parts of southeastern Ukraine. However, NATO allies have made it clear that they are unwilling to admit Ukraine until the war concludes. Thus, the alliance’s stance remains cautious and conditional.

Trump to Meet Putin in Saudi Arabia

Looking ahead, Trump is set to meet with Putin in Saudi Arabia for peace talks. He is pushing for a quick end to the war. Trump added that Ukraine will not be excluded from these discussions. “We expect that he’ll come here, and I’ll go there – and we’re going to meet probably in Saudi Arabia the first time,” he explained. Furthermore, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will also play a key role in the talks.
